It doesn't happen all at once. At some point, you start to notice that things are a little bit different and a lot less robust. It takes longer and longer to perform even the simplest of tasks.
Sometimes a loss of memory or a vital element leads to a sudden and catastrophic failure, but more likely the decline will be over a long period of time. It is painful to watch.
And despite our best efforts at resuscitation, the day comes when it's time to pull the plug on our old and dear friend. In the end, it's really the best thing for both of us.
I keep telling myself: "it's just a computer."
And I'll always remember the good times!

I would say you could hold on to the memory but that probably will not work.
Thanks for the chuckle. I've got a basement full of "dead friends". It's time to let go.
Richard, LOL, it is a hard decision, but speaking from experience, give yourself a few days with the new one and as much as you loved the old one it will be a distant memory, LOL. I name them all the same, after my mom, so I have had Margie, Margie2, Margie3, and now have Margie4. Works for me!
Richard, You are too funny. You had me going.
I had no trouble letting go of my last computer. Well I must confess I haven't let go entirely, the body is still here in a corner :)
Hi Richard,
This was a good one! I wasn't expecting the computer! My husband just got a surprise with his new lap top of 6 months ~ it had a crash and burn hard drive!! He is not laughing! Good thing we have a great computer guy who restored the data and put a new hard drive in in 24 hours! Other wise it was send it back and wait 30 days for a new hard drive..time is money!!
Mel...
Thanks for the consolation! And I'm glad to see you back in your rightful position!
Jane...
Should we have a "commitment" service for these dearly departed? I too have quite a catacomb down there. THX
Andrea...
LOL, it's my old desktop this time. I just went through this with my laptop, and it's too soon! (BTW at least I'm laughing again, thanks for all of your concern. I took a sleep aid last night,)
Terri...
And thank you so kindly for the comment and support!
James...
At least a part of it remains with you! lol and thanks.
Dorie,,,
This one is different, We took long flights together over San Francisco and Chicago, (MS Flight Simulator) kitty on my lap (they love the purring of the "engine!) Ah, the memories! Thanks, my friend.
Richard it is one of the harsh realities of life and we just never know when the end is going to come. If we live our lives to the best of our abilities, take regular maintenance checks, defrag and get the best anti-virus we can, then we have a long life potential. May it rest in recycle someplace. Fortunately for you you got that great deal on the laptop before Christmas. Condolences!
Richard....I was feeling very depressed reading this and then so happy it was only a computer.....go buy another one....and it won't be your last.
I know how you feel, mine had a stroke and is paralized in seveal areas. Not long for this world!
Richard - Sounded like you were going to debate health care reform! Just kidding. Look at it this way - the newer models have so much to offer. I told my wife this but she failed to see the humor!
I had a similar story, my computer was showing signs of age but I never expected it to just give up one day. I came home and it had passed on, I called in the experts and each told me that it was time. What really caused so much of the pain was that right after the computer expired, it's loving printer couldn't take it anymore and followed suit. I just have memories now.
You have inspired another post for me on my outside blog. I will link to your article and give credit. Thanks.
Very cute and Mel's comment was very funny!!! My computer and I are near the final throws of goodbye as well. It's getting slower and slower, I am having to restart it several times a day to wack it into submission.. So sad. And I know nothing about moving all my info from one computer to another and I don't want to lose all my photos and my college boy who knows everything is leaving Saturday! Ugh.
Richard I know what you mean. I got a new laptop last week and love it but I still have the old one sitting on my desk at the office where it was stuck for weeks because if you moved it the screen went blank. Haven't pulled the plug yet.
Richard, you had me going there for a while. Look on the bright side. Your new computer will be faster and work like a charm. Although, I don't envy you having to reload all your software again. Can you clone your old hard drive?
OK Richard, I was so ready to write out a sympathy card for your loss....until I read that last line!
Very clever my friend.
Pull the plug!
Richard- You had me going also. Great picture, it set the tone. I was tearing up! LOL
My condolences, friend. Now get thyself to Best Buy. :)
Richard, it can be a blessing in disguise! The death of my PC was a little sad, but it did open the way for a romance with Mac!
Gees, you had me too. I thought this was the reason for your lack of sleep of late! I guess you have solved that problem too. Sweet dreams!
Richard - I have a hard time letting go of vehicles, comfortable shoes and hand tools. But somehow or another, I have never developed any sentiments for electronic devices, whether computers, phones, tv's, etc. I do admit, I keep them a long time, but that is just economics and pragmatism.
Richard, I thought you were talking about a pet, I guess in a way a computer could be a pet....sorry for your loss
Richard, I started out thinking I don't need this depressing stuff ... shoulda' known better ... glad I read the whole thing ... and all of the comments ... what a great laugh!
Richard I am sure there is something in the health care bill providing for this.
Personally Richard unlike getting sentimental with selling an old car, I love throwing old computers out the window as long as I get to save my old emails. Good riddance to the piece of junk.
Richard,
I've got an old computer thats on the DNR list too. Keeps chugging along though.
Rich
You had me going on this one! Very clever!! I, too, thought this was ther reason for your lack of sleep....or maybe it was!
I never like being reprogrammed by a new computer. The older I get the bigger the learning curve.
That was so funny and it makes me remember a former job. Back in the day I went to work for a newspaper and was the first one to work on a "Micro Tek Ad-touch", big green screen with blinky green cursor. Set code and couldn't see what it actually looked like until I pulled the big honking 8" floppy disc from the machine and took it over to yet another machine that could "read" it and print it to film that then had to be developed. I loved that old computer and the day I quit the put her in the closet and brought in a new shinny Mac. Was a 7 year love affair... then I moved into radio...
Richard: Time for a mercy kill. Let the computer go. It's like an unreliable business partner. Severe the ties and be done. Find one more reliable.
Hi Richard... Perhaps you could build a small shrine to your old PC in a closet?
I have a desktop computer that I built from scratch that I am currently watching this painful decline in now.
