The Mary Ray Memorial School, which serves as the Raymond Community Center, was listed by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the 2009 Places in Peril.
The building was in an advanced state of disrepair, and was probably months from total collapse. It would have been lost forever if not for the work of zealous volunteers from all across the southeastern United States that worked diligently to preserve it!
I am happy to report that the building has not only been saved, but has been returned to it’s former glory. The top photo was taken less than one year ago in February 2009. The bottom photo was taken this week.
I would like to applaud all who participated in the project, both financially and with their hard work.
You saved a Coweta County treasure!

Richard, I love to hear things like this, that is truly wonderful! Kudos to all the volunteers who stepped up to the plate and repaired this historic site!
A Worthy project with community involvement. Wonderful Local Post. This points to why posts about a hyper-local events and happenings blend well with our message. Excellent !
Hi Richard...How commendable, to return life to a building that has served the community well.

Hi Richard!

Wow...that is unbelievably fantastic! What a beautiful building! One would never have suspected if they had only seen the "before" photo! Kudos to all of those wonderful volunteers who gave so much of their time and money to save such a treasure!
What a beautiful transformation. I love that a part of history has been preserved.
Hi Richard, that is a wonderful achievement. Hats off to all that pulled this together. If we could only value our past like this every chance we get, we'd be a richer nation.
Absolutely wonderful, Richard! What a beauty it is.

This building is back to it's majestic self once again. Glad to see they saved it!
Richard: Quite a transformation for just under one year. That's a great story! I love it when history is honored and not just torn down as being inconvenient, run down and old.
Andrea...
I though that this one was a goner for sure, but I am very glad to see it saved! Thanks for the comment.
Claude...
Thanks for the Localism plug ... this really is a hyper-local post and I was going for some good SEO here!
Kate....
It is awesome, isn't it? Thanks.
Hello Richard, What a stunning transformation. Wonderful job accomplished! The question is , "in another few weeks ( Feb) do you can expect that new roof to be white" ? :-)
Oh wow! That is incredible! I was staring at that old building as I read, and thinking it looked like something from Little House on the Prairie. Then I scrolled down... Amazing! Thank God for people who help with things like this! We need to preserve our history.
Richard, that is a great job done by the volunteers! It is a good thing to preserve our past!
Richard, they did a wonderful job at renovating the property...
Helping you help others live their American dream...
I'm all for "rotating the crops" of dilapidated housing stock and replanting the neighborhoods with wonderful new housing stock.
That said, preserving our wonderful history is also important.
Good job to those who managed this preservation. Folks can now tour and see "what was".
Wow! That was some transformation and well worth it. We need to keep these reminders of the bygone days. Like people, just because they age....
That looks like it was quite a project. It is great to see a community pull together to maintain a link with the past.
