I was at a holiday gathering over the weekend with lots of friends and family spanning the generations. And although each age group has their own entertainment agenda, there is one special binding force that hasn't changed over the years.
Music!
Since our circle is blessed with talented musicians ready and willing to provide competent accompaniment, it isn't long before the singing commences.
The seniors, middle-aged, youth and children all chime in, and as the volume escalates from to restrained to boisterous, the general level of gaiety and merriment rises proportionately.
And for those few hours, everyone was united in rapture by song.
And it was great!

Hi Richard:
You are so right!
Music definitely bridges the general gaps and brings people together.
Who can resist joining in during a Christmas song!!!
Music can break down barriers like nothing else. It's not just age barriers either. Look at Michael Jackson for instance, he broke down cultural barriers all over the world. It sooths the soul. Great post.
Richard: Music is an universal language and can totally cross the generation gap...Unless is Rap...(Ok...just my personal taste) All The Best!!!
Richard, when living in Atlanta in my much younger days music was a large part of our family get togethers. Whenever we were together it always ended up with singing and that was just such a great thing. I do miss that.
Hi Richar, music is the one thing that brings people of all generations together. Unless it's head-banging, screaming music and to me thatis NOT music!
Toula...
It's wonderful fun and it's free! Thanks.
Nathan...
It really can ... it was more fun than I have had in a long time!
Maria...
It's a wonderful way to bring people together! Thanks for the comment.
Can't help to get excited with an old fashioned sing-along! Even us bad singers can participate although I usually pick the guitar!
As we too are a music loving family, I know it is therapeutic and can heal what ails you, if only for a little while. I'm glad you had such a great time!
Music binds us all. It sounds like you had a happy holiday.
As a huge fan of music, I completely agree with you on this one Richard.
Music can bring everyone together regardless of age, ethnicity, etc.
I keep two guitars on hand at all times in my home and someone will always pick one up and start the bonding process!
RIchard, music makes everything fun and binds us all together. Sounds like a good time had by all.
Hi Richard: As a former entertainer myself - nothing brings a crowd together like music.
:)
Reminds me of our Thanksgiving! Music is a wonderful thing, and you can match your mood to it or it to your mood! Happy New Year Richard!
Richard~ music is a universal tie. I am always listening to music...just about 24/7. It sounds like you all had a good time
Richard you are so right. And furthermore music to me is also quite the gap closer of not only age, but even at times international barriers as well. It truly is universal.
Richard, We are blessed with a teen-aged son who has a talent for the jazz guitar, and was recently invited to play at the Berkeley School of Music in Boston. I could watch and listen to him play all day.
Richard...We used to do a lot of that also, but most of the musical people live a long way away now. sounds like you had a great time!
Richard - I have to admit my guitar was plunked and strummed over the past few days. It still sounds good. Cheers to your music
Hi Richard. I usually have soft classical music playing from the shelf above my computer workstation. It tends to ease the flow of work.
My two young daughters love music and like a lot of "my" music. The good stuff never goes out of style.
Ah, nothing like love and music to bridge the generation gap. Glad to hear you had a good time with the family and friends over the holiday.
You're so correct Richard, and I'm very jealous. I always envied those with some talent, of which I lack completely!
Hi, Richard:
Yes, music is a unifying force. Think of how many generations have listened to The Beatles. They still bring people together.
