Snow storms have left affected communities with a major dilemma …getting rid of it!
Although we rarely get snow in middle Georgia, we occasionally get enough to know that is it both very beautiful and quite a nuisance at the same time!
And when you start measuring snow in feet instead of inches, you’ve got a major snow removal problem on your hands. Municipalities can run up some huge fuel and overtime expenses trying to deal with the excess of white stuff!
And with local budgets already suffering from decreasing revenues, a really bad winter can be a budget breaker. And it looks like it’s going to be a particularly bad one this year.
So be prepared to open your wallet and dig a little deeper. And hope for an early spring!

Beautiful photo and yes the snow removal can be a real issue - Fortunately this big snowfall came early in the season when there still is money in the budget for the plows, but you are absolutely right that later in the season, it is going to be very tight. This snow may have wiped out some municipal budgets for snow removal for the entire year.
Love those railroad pictures. Yes those snows measured in feet are quite a challenge. Out here it means shutting down for a day or two.
Richard, We lived in North Carolina for a few years and it snowed several times in that few years. The problem was that when it snowed they would have to wait for the sun to melt the roads so our children were out of school for long periods of time. Is that the same as Georgia?
We got a foot and 1/2 of snow today. Left us all with cabin fever, the Sunday before Christmas.
I have no right to complain. I chose to live in New England.. on days like today, I ask.. Why, why, Why do we live here?????????? But when spring arrives.. what a gift!
Need not worry, Obama will suggest a stimulus package for snow removal. Everyone will get relief. We are out of luck here but we did have 25 inches of rain in December already.
Two inches on the ground is all we have here, if that, but we know it's coming. It's just a matter of when it will get here:)
Lise...
Hopefully, this will be the worst storm of this winter. Thanks for the comment.
Guy...
In Newnan GA, one INCH will shut us down for a day or two! lol and thanks.
Marchel...
Indeed it is ... and it can take days! We just don't have the equipment or budget for snow removal. Thanks so much.
Hi Richard. Fortunately I live in Florida and we have our concerns. Hope all who are seeing snow gets some relief in sight. ~ Lana
Like everyone else said, awesome picture! I think you have a postcard in your future. And you are correct, every government is facing budget cuts. But somehow I think we should just enjoy it. Snow is a temp problem.
I couldn't tell you the last time that I actually saw snow, but I know when we get it, we shut down. So I can't imagine what it would be like around here with a few feet of the stuff.
Baltimore had a beautiful 20'' snowfall.. spectacular beauty. Took photos while shoveling. Today the bright blue skys against the bright white snow..oh so pretty. The city did a fantastic job of keeping the roads open. (lots of money spent for cleaning, clearing, salt, plowing, overtime etc.)
I have measured the snow in feet several times. It can be a real challange that is for sure!
Asheville...only about 18 inches on our deck...no power though, except shovel-power =)...and you are so right, Richard...good thing we were prepared!
Richard, Yes, it does look as if the east really got hammered. Thankfully, all we got out of this was rain.
Merry Christmas...
And a prosperous New Year...
Some of us are blessed to have snow as an infrequent nuisance. Others have it as an ongoing headache every winter.
I'd say we got about 16 inches, with drifts to 2 feet. Here in New Jersey we've already opened our wallets, and they've been picked clean!!
Richard,
The only thing good about the 24 inches we got was that it pretty much guarantees a White Christmas. If it all melts before then, I hope I get an Ark for Christmas.
Rich
Hi Richard, we got about 18 inches so we are good for the next 10 years, lol. We haven't gotten snow like this in years! But, by noon yesterday, the major streets were pretty clear.

Good morning Richard, I was happy to say that Western CT dodged the snow bullet, or snow train, LOL. But we didn't dodge the cold train, it is here and settled in quite nicely I might add. BRRRRRR!
Nice quote from PM Dawn, Richard! I couldn't stand to live someplace where it snowed like that. England was bad enough.
Stay warm!
Robin
We had 20 inches here. Its been quite a challenge to get the roads cleared. I've been impressed with how well they have done.
Hi Richard,
I love your railroad pictures! The snow is beautiful and there will be many white Christmases this year! There are always trade offs for the personal enjoyment..It will all work out!
Hi Richard, I love your photo. Snow scenes photographed in black and white are very stunning. Have a happy holiday.
Richard, having lived in Kansas City, MO and Chicago for many years I understand the issues of dealing with snow...but the reason I ultimately had to leave a comment is because of your photo. That is really beautiful and there are elements that draw people into this photo they may not actually be aware of and I wont spoil it...this is a very good shot.
I have experienced the snow in feet and ice in inches and neither was fun...give me a tropical storm any day! You can run from a storm but run from snow?
