My computer‘s hard drive failed a month or so ago. So as a short term solution, I worked from a home back-up computer and I also borrowed a laptop from a friend until I could purchase a new computer.
And now that I haveaquired a new laptop, I’m trying to synchronize the files on all three systems so I can return the borrowed laptop to it’s rightful owner! The trouble is trying to figure out where I put everything and how to easily transport it to my new computer.
It sounded easy, but I have been working on it since early this morning and I’m only half done, My eyes are flickering and I can’t see straight,
And I was supposed to be relaxing this weekend.

I went through this in February this year. I recommend that you buy an external hard drive and back up the entire system before returning it. Then you have access to everything and you can verify your data as you go along. When you are sure that you have everything you need, format the external drive, back up the new computer, and set it to auto backup several times a week.
Oh, my sweet Richard. It's a very short drive to crazy over here, so I wouldn't even attempt this!
Richard, your going nuts and your eyes are on the fritz yet you still have the eneryg to post...what a guy!!
Mark's suggestion sounds great...think I'll give it a try.
That process can take FOREVER!!! What stress.
Richard,
Transporting files via USB is pretty easy, you already know that. If your new machine is W7, the library does look a bit different than the old Explorer in XP.
Good luck.
Rich
Mark...
I already bought the 1 TB external Drive and I am backing up like a crazy man. The problem is with propriety files like Outlook PST files. Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it!
Susan...
Ah, but we're never alone, are we? lol
Steve...
It sure can, plus I'm discarding what i don't need. Thanks so much!
Richard, computer issues are never any fun. I have been having issues with my internet service. Clearwire is becoming Clear in the Seattle area and there has been some disruption of service because of this.
The answer is ONE backup hard drive! I primarily use 2 computers. And I want ALL work related projects on both of them. Most work is done on my desktop so I just back it all up to the external hard drive, then copy it to the laptop. But if I'm working on the laptop, I immediately put that work on my 8 GB flash/jump drive, and copy it to the desktop =)
I recommend you hire people for this type of situation. Save yourself time and stress. In the long run maybe save some money too.
Richard, I feel for you! Donna's suggestion sounds really good to me but I know you're a guy who likes to do this stuff yourself so best of luck to you!
Richard, Know the feeling completely well. I was working on a huge video project where I had both my MACs running and I was writing reports on my Piece of Crap...
Helping you live your American dream...
Hope it is all finally in one place Richard. Have a great week.
Richard, good luck, I can't help you with where you saved the files to. But, there are a number of Synch utilities via USB that may help. Microsoft has one (search synch) - I use a program called Always Synch. Once set up it's also a very handy backup utility.
Been there, done that, will drive you completely crazy. Use simm cards and/or flash drives. I use the move function to take them off the computers and save them onto the removable storage. If I have a lot of files, I drag them onto my iPod and dump them into My Documents to be sorted later... :-)
When you have a chance we'd love to hear how your new laptop is working! Good luck getting your current situation straightened out...
Richard .....I can barely work on one at a time..Ha Ha ....Hope you got it all worked out and that you have a great week!
Richard, I have similar issues. Two computers. Information on both computers. There has GOT to be a simpler way than copying onto an external hard drive and transferring from one computer to another. When I worked for the federal government, we had a server with public files that everyone coud save their documents onto so that we could all share the same information. To work on those documents, we would go into the public files, from whatever computer we happened to be working on wherever in the world.
Isn't there an external server we, as individuals, could "rent" to put all of our documents, pictures, files etc. into (password protected, of course, so that it's not open to the world) and then access no matter which computer we happened to be on?
Richard,
I had computer problems just over a week ago...it sure is a pain...I like Tanya's idea if it was safe...
Richard, I just hate it when the computers don't do what I thought they should in the way I thought they would. that is really frustrating. Good luck on your project.
Well, You should know that I am no help. I would tell you to call tech support, but as you can see form a previous post...they weren't much help either!;-}
Well at least you chose to use pecans.... I would not like to be you or anyone else in this situation.
I have bad file management when it comes to my laptop. I can keep up with client files, but anything else that I save I have to search like hell to find.
