I purchased a new computer today that basically has everything I need. Dual-core processor, large hard drive, 4 MB RAM, card readers and DVD writer. It even has a built in webcam and Windows 7.
And I paid $400 for it. This is a dramatic change for me. I typically purchase high end products with all of the bells and whistles and pay about two grand for the privilege.
But it seems that an expensive computer is as likely to fail as a value computer, so this time I opted to purchase a computer that by any standard is still head and shoulders above any previous computer that I have owned.
So essentially, I will back up religiously and play the numbers game. I could purchase a new value computer EVERY year for the next three years and still be ahead of the game.
I am looking forward to the results of my cost-saving experiment. And I feel that this is the right choice for now!
It's going to take a while to load all of my software and to tweak the computer it to all of my tastes, but I'm ready to get started!
But I'm ready to get started right now!

Richard, that's unreal...$400 for all that! Sounds like a great deal.
You know , Richard, with all the advancements in chips and graphics it seems to make sense that you can purchase a machine that will do everything you could want for a lower price. I think your experiment will work out fine. Backing up is probably the key.
Interesting - I'd like to see the results ... in a few years!
Good luck with the new laptop, I gave my order to Santa yesterday while we were at a big box store. Yeh Santa!
Richard,
Go with the $400 machine. I recently read that laptops have a 25% failure rate in the first year. They do take a lot of punishment.
Rich
Craig...
Yes, and I had to drive a long way to find a store that had 1 left ... it was quite a deal! THX
Guy...
It has a one year warranty, so if I get at least that it will be cost effective! Thanks for the comment!
Steve...
Only time will tell! THX.
Hi Richard, If you didn't already, you might consider an external drive for data backups. If the Acer gets fried, you can still cook with your data. Good luck.
Richard, I also purchaed a new computer on Black Friday with all the same features and price. Isn't Christmas shopping awesome?
HI Richard, I always spend the money for the extended warranty for computers and fridges lol. I have bad luck with both right after the one year mark passes.
Hey Richard - I'm about to join you! I spent $2,200 on the computer I'm using at this very moment. It's very close to the end of it's useful life. I won't spend more than $500 on the next one and it will be an upgrade!
Richard, Sorry Pal, but I am not a huge Acer fan. Have one. Being a power user, I was completely underwhelmed by its performance. I keep it as a back-up box for my PC applications...
Helping you live your American dream...
I would love to hear all about the results Richard as I am considering buying a few notebook type units for the girls this year and Acer was in consideration.
Good luck with it Richard. Let us know how it goes. I hope you weren't in line for a black Friday special all night to get this.
Richard, way to go! I think you did the right thing. Doesn't matter how much you pay, they all get issues.
I'm interested to hear how you get along with the Acer. I've been considering one, but have been an HP user forever. Let us know how it works out.
Richard, I'm a HP girl but do know people that have the Acer and are happy with it. So, good luck with it and have fun! :)
"Dude, you got an Acer." I recently invested in a new Acer as well. It is my laptop but I still have a desktop I rely upon to hold all my files. I had an Acer laptop previously and was very happy with it. It worked well for three years until my daughter broke it. Just saying, it may be a better bargain than you anticipated.
Richard...I have never bought top end. I never use all the bells and whistles anyway.
Richard - I used to be very 'brand conscious' in my early computing days. It seemed as though the major companies had a higher level of technology available to them. But that's not so anymore. I discovered Systemax computers this past summer and will probably stick with them until I'm convinced to buy something else. They are reliable, 100% American made and supported, and priced VERY reasonably. I no longer rely on HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc.
I just had a discussion with our tech guy about this. I was trying to decide if the continual 2 year failure of my computers was due to quality of construction, evolution of tech, or my brutal lifestyle.
His response - The tech rule is that every 18 months they have doubled the amount of stuff they can fit onto a processor. New versions of software and gadgets are built to run on the new standard, causing the over 18 month old computers to non-perform or perform sluggishly. So basically the software industry and our constant craving for better, more graphics, and faster, means more RAM, speed, and Hard Drives, so the industry makes computers obsolete in just a year or two due to software improvements alone.
He treats laptops as disposable - buy one to get you through 2 years and then upgrade. Otherwise pay 2 grand and still need to upgrade it when all the doodads require more power in 2-3 years.
And the rest - well. I'm brutal on computers. A laptop is that- it is in my lap, on the floor, on car hoods, table tops, desk tops, countertops - nothing without a titanium casing will survive me, LOL.
I just bought a new $500 laptop, and I just use my External HD to back up in case of failure, but I'd do that on a $2k fandangled machine too. :)
