Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week? Like it or not, “the holidays” are here and from next Monday until January 2 we will all slip into an alternate lifestyle.
It’s not just that the upcoming festivities require actual preparation and make real demands on our already precious time, it’s also that we all tend to slip into some kind of alter ego personality, much more easy-going and relaxed and ready to savor life.
It’s a pleasant time of year that makes the onset of winter more palatable, and a time that we can reconnect with family and old friends and maintain those relationships in a very personal way.
And the best part of it is that we all have a built-in excuse for running a bit behind on our ordinary mundane duties:
“You know, it’s the holidays and…”

Richard,
I'm already noticing the effects around the office. It's getting quiet and people aren't coming in as often.
It is the turkey...blame it one the turkey. What is that makes you sleepy and so relaxed? Yes, we must guard against becoming too lax although setting aside time to enjoy the season is important.
Richard.....you made some fine points....I think the holidays this year will not be as merry as previous years.....there are so many people out there today who can't afford to put food on the table, much less celebrate as in previous years....it's a good time to start donating to food banks and toys for tots.
Richard, I gave your post alot of thought and wanted to reply with a well thought out, informative response, but, you know, it's the holidays and...
Richard..it is a different mind set but I don't think as lazy as normal due to what is going on in the economy...
Brian...
It's amazing isn't it? And here I thought that it was just our office! THX
Gary...
Although the "season" does seem to have gotten longer over the years! But I like it all. Thanks.
Barbara...
There is TRUE joy in giving and helping, so I sense that I lot of us will experience that ecstasy this year. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
Hi Richard:
It's a great time of year!
Preparing for Christmas is getting earlier and earlier each year. I just made a posted about that!
Yes, it is time to re-connect with family and enjoy the season.
I love the holiday season! Everyone seems to just slow down a bit. People seem friendlier. And, as you mentioned, it's a great excuse for running a bit behind on our ordinary mundane duties:
“You know, it’s the holidays and…”
Gerry...
lol, thet is EXACTLY what I am talking about!!! Thanks, my friend.
Pat...
Perhaps an undertone of the times, but the holidays will at least offer some cheer to those that are hurting! Thanks.
Toula...
I missed that one somehow ... I'll check it out. Thanks you my friend.
It is crazy in our neighborhood, people are putting out decorations in their yard already, lets eat turkey first :-)
Richard,
Stressful, but absolutely the best time of the year.
Rich
Ah yes, the big one. It will be harder for so many this year. My family is a bit disjointed, one daughter just moved to FL with my grandson, hard to deal with, yet my other is expecting her first baby Jan 9th, so we are busy preparing for that. I think our own Christmas will be very quiet and different this year. It is almost a relief. Sometimes it gets so crazy...
Richard - my wife is already making plans on decorating the house, and getting a tree, even though we will be leaving the state. But, then, I have been seeing Christmas displays in stores for almost 2 months now.
Mel...
And God bless us, every one! THX my friend.
Craig...
It happens all of the time doesn't it? Thanks for playing along!
Brad and Angela...
We've started inside but won't finish anytime soon. lol and thanks.
Richard, This is the 'feel good' time of the year as we visit with friends and family and get those long awaited hugs and catch up with each other! Oh, what fun it is to.....
Hi Richard. Love the holidays.
I feel more strongly about them now that I have two little girls to celebrate with!
Looking to end the year well...
Let all have a great 2010.
Ken
Richard: I am ready for holiday mode. Ready to unwind a bit and not run around at such a break neck pace.
Rich...
Yes it is and I am looking forwrd to the season! THX
Andrea...
But it will still be "that" time of year, bittersweet as it is. THX
Mike...
They start earlier every year!
I need a more relaxed mode, so I'm delighted it's holiday time. I take the Wednesday befoer Thanksgiving off to cook, and I can't wait!
It was a nice day yesterday...So we put up some of the garland on the house and a few other little things.
I wonder why I just can't keep the more relaxed state from Jan. to Oct.! It always seems easier at the end of the year.
This year is almost in the books and I have no idea where it went. I always enjoy the Holidays though, so I am sure this year will be no different.
How right you are! I like the Alternative Lifestyle label, because that is exactly what it is! Merry Christmas!
It does seem like they start the "Holidays" Earlier every year.
The Holiday Season goes tooo fast. There's entirely too much crammed into it.. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could stretch it out just a tad.?
Is it time to panic yet? I'm not ready, I'm not ready. Arghhhhhh. Ok, I feel better now :) ~Rita
When the warm days come, out go the neighbors with lights. I tend to wait until my butt freezes off via procrastination.
We normally host Thanksgiving for the family at our house. Which means my wife goes into heavy stress mode about now. I'm thankful that she will return to normal on the day after, Friday.
