Coweta Fayette Real Estate & Newnan Homes for sale blog by Richard Weisser of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Have social networks obliterated the generation gap? It’s all about the ability to communicate.

The generation gapWhen I was a young lad, the phrase “generation gap” was coined. This was the age of dissent, when young idealistic and progressive thinkers rebelled against their older stoic and conservative parents and those in positions of authority.

It was an upheaval of the status quo unlike any other in the last hundred years, and it changed the fabric of our society. There was a concerted effort to “never trust anyone over thirty!”

And the term generation gap was often blamed on a lack of communication between the affected parties. The tendency was to either not talk about the issues at all or to vehemently argue your position in such a belligerent manner that the message was lost in the crossfire.

Today there is no such lack of communication. Thanks to the onslaught of social networking, members of all generations have a method of easily communicating their thought and ideas to their broad spectrum of network “friends”

And even the term “friend” is bonding. Offspring are now friends of their parents, employees are now friends of their bosses, and business competitors are now graciously sharing relevant information.

And so the “generation gap” has narrowed year after year, and is now practically non-existent. And although we don’t always agree on anything from fashion to politics, at least we can communicate with each other.

And that’s really a good thing!

I've always thought that as we age the gap gets narrower.

Janice...

I'm suggesting that the gap is narrower from the beginning! We do communicate much better, don't we? Thanks as always for the comment.

Richard, I find that it started when people started thinking for themselves. Excellent insight!

Dude what were you 12 in that photo? There's no doubt - I was talking to my 60 year-old mom on Facebook this morning - say no more.

I think that social media has made it easier for many people to discuss apposing views in a somewhat civilized manner.

Richard:  In my family, there will always be a generation gap between my Mom and I.  She will not touch anything like a computer, so there is no chance of getting her into email, social networking and the like.

Richard - I think it depends on how open-minded an individual is as to how narrow the gap is. I have found the "older" I get the more narrow my "personal gap is.

I feel that for many, technology has widened the gap. Many elderly have nothing to do with a computor or other hightech stuff.

Learning or is it re-learning how to communicate with each other is a good thing.  I had practically forgot about the term, generation gap because of the new technology available.

Yes, very interesting times in the sphere of human interaction and computer networks.  I'n not so sure that it's a good thing.  But, used well it can be a new way to interact.

Richard:

There are certainly more ways to communicate now and that helps. But I think there will always be somewhat of a gap between generations.  I do, however, feel that there is more trust than there used to be.

That is a precious photo.

Interesting, the comments are great, too - can you see us all at 80 years old texting each other and sharing pictures, and playing hand held games on our phones !!!!

Hmm. Intersting. You make some good points. My mom recently got a Facebook page. So my brothers and I have made it a habit of leaving obnoxious comments on it. LOL! I have twin brothers who recently decided to tell each other "mom likes me best" and then "you're the evil spawn" on my mom's page. ROFL! I was cracking up when I found those comments. So of course I had to jump in. Once I finished calling them my personal nicknames, my mom commented that she didn't even know any of us. HAHAHA!
