One of the interesting things about photographing landscapes is that a very large three dimensional subject has to be compressed into a very small two dimensional image.
And it can be very difficult to covey the breathtaking enormity of a panorama on a single "slide." And although it represents a mere "thumbnail" of reality, a good landscape photo can serve as a virtual suggestion of an exquisite vista.
So it is best to choose a characteristic of the subject that you want to emphasize, be it color, form, or effect. The result should communicate the artist's intentions to even the most casual viewer.
So don't just shoot a scene because it's "pretty." Rather, thing about the artistic message you wish to highlight ahead of time. It makes the finished product much more interesting!

I get it. Beautiful photos, but the moment-- the bigness of the moment is hard to capture. Kathy
I hope that you will continue to offer your suggestions on how to improve in our artistic abilities. Thank you my friend.
Hi Richard... Great photo tips and incredible shots. I have been reading about photography online a bit lately and your tips very concisely summarize what I recently read from several online experts... I guess you're sort of the photographic equivalent of Cliff Notes without the dilution of material! Thanks!
You are exactly what I need, someone to be my art guide. Those shots are beautiful. I get what you're saying.
Hi Richard...It is so hard to duplicate the full expanse of some landscapes but your examples have done a great job.
Kate
I sometimes take pics purely for their color, and "hope" they are usable later. I'll take completely random pics for use in blogs. Most never make it, some do. I've also have taken panoramic pics but never took the time to put them together :-/ Seriously, it is almost always a small fragment of the real beauty.
And Richard, you are the MASTER, so your advice is welcome and shall be heeded! ;-)
Kathy...
It's nearly impossible! Thanks for the comment!
Don...
I'm an artist at heart, but I have to work for a living! THX my friend.
Steve...
Thanks for the kind words. I do like to be succinct! lol and thanks.
Richard...The Smokies are very simalar to My Alaska trip. Words and photo's just don't convey the real thing.
I've got a lot to learn but keep trying I'm listening but difficult to change old habits.
Richard, You and I both share the same passion. Granted shooting vistas are difficult and often loose something in the translation between what you see and what you get. I look forward to the day when they will develop a 3d camera and a way to display them. Wouldn't that be too cool?☺☺☺
Helping you live your American dream...
Richard, so you are actually an artist and you sell real estate to support your habit? :)
Outstanding photos and good tips. Thanks!
I am with Mike, I would love a 3D camera, LOL. Your photos are always beautiful and you are certainly an artist! And the advice is well worth taking, thank you.
Love the second photograph- the corn field in the foreground gives a real perspective of the entire area. Very good example!

I always like it when you give advice on the photography side of things my friend. It's a subject that I have liked for a long time, I'm just not that good at it, so I can use all the advice I can get.
Richard, You indeed have a gift. I miss the N. Georgia mountains a great deal, but these rugged Ouachita Mountains are a pretty good substitute. I just wish I had your abilities. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Richard - Your photos definitely capture the moment and the feeling of the landscape. It always so difficult to frame the subject. I never seem to do justice for the subject matter.
So what you are saying is that there is a bit more to this "take 12 photos and post to the MLS" than what meets the eye (pun intended). Great pictures!
