My trusty notebook suddenly died yesterday. First the infamous blue screen popped up, and then nothing. It appears as if the hard drive is gone for good,
I am generally prepared for such eventualities. But the sudden loss of an important tool can be disruptive at the least, and devastating at the worst. And even though I am typing this post on a backup computer, everything is more difficult because it's not set up the way I want it and I don't have all of my usual tools at my disposal.
So everything that I do today will be harder, and it will be weeks before I get a replacement computer properly set up for my business. And it's an expense that I could have done without for right now.
But all in all, it's just a minor inconvenience in the perpetual drama of everyday life. Things happen, and we just have to deal with it.
It's just another day in the life of a computer dependent businessperson!

I feel for you! That really stinks!
I know the feeling. I lost ALL emails and contacts a few weeks back and am still in recovery mode. Time to subscribe to an outside update storage system.
Richard:
I have been giving a notebook some serious consideration. Has this (notebook crash) happend to you before?
Richard, good luck. I hate it when this happens. Each time, I say, OK, I'm not going wild customizing and importing to great extremes, because when I set up a new box, it just takes forever. But then I do it all anyway.
Richard, I hate hate hate that. I feel your pain. I recently got a portable hard drive to put pictures on as I have been suffering from computer issues at the house with our PC. Best of luck, I will be interested to hear what you end up purchasing!
Hi Richard:
I'm hearing you and am thinking of a new one also.
My notebook is so old and it won't allow updates. I can't even load some websites. But it's still ticking!!!
"Things happen, and we just have to deal with it."
Great attitude but it still irks me because we are so dependent on our tech stuff! I bought a Macbook last year at much more expense than I wanted but it does work almost all the time...
Richard, I feel bad for you. We become so dependent on our computers. When they do go bad we can be lost. Hopefully you had the hard drive backed up.
Hi Mel...
I am trying not to think about what was lost! THX
Edward...
It's going to keep me busy for a while! Thanks.
Bob...
Yes, but I have been able to recover before after a LOT of hard work. Not this time. Thanks
Gabe...
And I KNOW that I will do the same thing! Thanks for the comment.
Andrea...
It's going to have to be something inexpensive! THX
Richard,
There is no way I can recreate a new hard drive from scratch. I clone my existing drive every two weeks and if the one in the PC crashes the clone backup is in and working in a couple of minutes.
No system is perfect but this one is working for me.
I feel your pain.
Rich
I had a computer problem a few weeks back. I have a back up program with an external hard drive. This set up has saved me from much extened grief many times. Sounds like your not backing up you stuff Richard.
Oh no... sweetie I am so sorry to hear that. Those always whomp...
Well it is nice to know that I may be an equal in the world of crashed computers
Shelton
Oh Richard,
I'm sure the Internet will still be there when you get those bugs out.....go run the mile or eat everything in sight while you watch a good gangsta movie:)
Richard: I'm sorry that you're having to deal with this. There is never a good time for a computer crash. Can you ever imagine yourself in such a state of boredom, and an excess of money that you have no idea what to do with, thinking, "Gosh, today would be a good day for my computer to crash." You'd officially be a spoiled brat when you get to that point.
Richard, I feel for you, been there, done that! Oh! The sinking feeling of...did I remember to back everything up?
Anytime a computer goes out these days it throws a massive kink in the system. Turns out we didn't need some big war like in the terminator, the machines have already won.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh I feel your pain! Hope your back in the swing of things at lightning speed. Thanks for stopping by my blog this morning!
Richard,
How did we ever SURVIVE before the computer and all of the other electronic things came along? I feel your pain my friend.
Hey! If you're not completely backed up, did you know you can still retrieve your files without starting windows? Linux has a mini version that fits on a CD. You can boot your PC up from the Linux CD and it will show you what's on your computer so you can retrieve your files. It's WAY cool! Not cool at having to go through that, but way cool when actually doing it. Yes, I am pure geek at heart.
Good luck! I am so paranoid that I backup my backups. O.o
Richard...Mine is on it's last legs, trying to get a bit moreout of it. My in-laws just went down last week and I have been setting up the new one and getting everything updated. Very time consuming.
We are suffering the death of our Assistants computer right now! Of course it's THE computer that has everything ... EVERYTHING ... on it! It's all backed up but what a pain!
Richard:
I have to admit to being overly complacent about this and if you saw how old my laptop is you would ask why. Thanks for making me think about a backup plan and good luck with yours.
I am very complacent about backing stuff up. I'm sorry for your troubles buddy. xxoo
