Over the weekend, I started a little project at home. Over the years, our bonus room has become more of a warehouse than a usable room, and I have made it my mission to convert it back to usable space.
So I began sorting through the piles of unfinished art, old papers and books when I came across all of my high school and college textbooks. I began looking through the math and science books, and I thought to myself:
"Wow, did I ever really know all of this stuff?"
There were a lot of complex formulas and scientific and mathematical terms that I had not thought about in years. Some I didn't recognize at all. That was an incredible amount of information that I apparently used to know that must be stored somewhere!
So it got me to thinking: Where does all of that stuff you used to know go when you're done using it? Is there some gigantic repository of knowledge somewhere that archives all of our unused cognitions?
Perhaps there is a humongous hard drive in the sky where all of our dormant knowledge is "backed up," perhaps a little rusty but still able to be accessed.
And is there a way to reclaim the entire stash of lost academic prowess short of going through the entire process again? As I browsed through the books, I realized that at one time I must have been pretty intelligent!
But that was a long, long time ago!
PS and I also realized why I never finish my projects!

Richard,
For me the repository is my iPhone right now. See, it just beeped telling me I have to respond to a post.
Sadly, the information is still in my that big repository sitting on my shoulders, I just don't access it with the speed I used to. A couple of bad sectors I guess.
Rich
Richard, I think as we fill up the space with more info, it falls out the other side. You know, like a conveyor belt.... in goes new knowledge, out goes stuff we haven't accessed for a long long time. Although sometimes stuff we need gets pushed out by accident....
Good luck with your project!
Great question! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could revive that knowledge somehow. I was taking notes the other day and thought how great it would be if I could still write in shorthand like I learned in college. Oh to be able to reboot my mind!
With teenagers i ask myself the question almost daily, "Did I ever know any of this?"
Richard, as experiences multiply, our sense of intelligence changes
Richard, For me it simply disappears, never to return again!
Richard, I think everything we learn goes into the great repository of the subconscious. Retrieving it though is another story. Good thing you kept the books. At least you have a paper reference should you ever need it. Have a good week!
Richard - we still have it, all that information stored into some secure places in our brain, referred to as W.O.M. area, or our Write Only Memory;^)
I believe all the info is still within us and it comes out in our character and actions without being conscience of it. It is kinda like my Spanish, however, sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't!
Richard, sometimes I am totally amazed at the stuff that I've stored in my goofy little brain! Recently, I pulled out an altar boy response that I had to memorize to get out of 7th grade - reciting it in perfect Latin! Go figure!
Rich...
I wonder if we can get one of those things implanted? THX
Andrea...
I love the conveyor belt analogy. You should write a post about that! Thanks.
Sharon...
With my luck if I rebooted I would get a blue screen! lol and thanks.
Hmmmm, interesting question. I agree the information stays with us. It simply morphs into our attitudes, opinions and desires. But I really like the idea of a humongous hard drive in the sky! It would be so much easier to access some of those distant tidbits of info that must still be rattling around in my brain somewhere :)
Richard. After my wifes first husband passed on, it has taken her 12 years just to condense thing down by 50% Most of the balance is tuff that needs to be disposed of because she has no need for it anymore. But we trip over it all the time. Me...I thin things out all the time.
Trivia Pursuit expert? Not me! I think it just fades into the present - which is top of mine. Great points!
Richard: I think I have found a limit to the amount of available memory I have. I find myself reaching into the way back compartments and coming up empty when it comes to remembering names of high school friends and such.
My garage is loaded down with all our crap that we have amassed over the years together. The bonus room is reserved for a pool table and a wet bar so I can have enough fun not to worry about what I may have forgotten over the years.
I am trying to figure out how to unlock the rusty crypt where all of my old unused knowledge is stored. When I find it I will let you know.
Rick...
I went throught that ...it's rtough! lol
Janice...
Now that's a positive way to look at it! THX
Barb...
Huh ... sorry, I wasn't listening! lol
LOL - I was wondering about that too, all the things I studied and learned (I thought anyway) in school, and now - I'm still looking for that file in my head :) ~Rita
