I am the cook at our house, and I like my dishes to burst with flavor. In most cases, I use fresh chilies from the garden to add that extra zing that makes the recipe stand out.
The good thing about peppers is that they are easy to grow and quite prolific. A single plant can produce hundreds of chilies, and you can have many varieties in a very small space,
The bad thing about hot chilies is that a little pepper goes a long way. You really have to control the heat, especially when using habaneras or serranos. Adding too much fire can really scorch your meal.
So before long, you find that you are producing many more hot peppers than you can ever consume. You can pickle, dry, and preserve to your heart's content, and it's probably impossible to give away your excess so you always have some laying around with no possible way of ever being used.
The same thing can be said about business tools. Take a moment and think about all of the systems and tools that you have that are lying around unused and dormant. We often put into place more marketing devices than we can ever properly maintain, and before long we just have another task that we "forgot to do" because all of the tools that are supposed to make our lives easier really demand a lot of our time.
A few good systems are better than many systems that we can't or won't use.
Because you really can have too much of a good thing!

That's been my theory about social media every since taking the plunge. Spreading your efforts too thin simply waters down the return.
Richard, REALTORS® think that next super tool is going to make their business soar and when it doesn't quite work as advertised it goes to the wayside. When we find a system that works we should stick with it. Lenn also makes a good point. You can belong to all the social networks available, but if you don't do anything with them they simply will not work.
Richard, how true. I have to sit and think where are my efforts best placed, what am I doing that I don't need to be doing, what did I forget to do?
Love the pepper picture!
Being from Texas, I am a big fan of all things chili-peppers. I wrote a post about the huge Salsa Contest we have in Austin every summer last year. I do like spicy have to say that Pain is NOT a condiment! And I agree with you that fewer tools, used wisely are much more efficient!
Richard - that is why, as Lenn mentioned, I limit my social media exposure to blogging. But, I do love the zing that some good hot peppers can put into food. I am also the main cook here, but my wife does limit me to one crushed habanero in my chili. But I a now getting her to enjoy wasabi.
Richard, I like your analogy on this one. However, I'm not in a hot pepper market, more of a prune and fiber area here!
Laughing hysterically at Gabe's comment!
Richard, A good analogy and one I can appreciate (I have a vegetable garden). I think you are dead on with simplifying your marketing and using what works best.
Lenn...
You just can't keep up with all of it. It's just not possible! Thanks as always.
Michael...
What is worse is if you are paying for the system every month and not using it! THX
Andrea...
Thanks ...they all came from my "deck" garden. (Grown in pots!)
Richard, like others living in Texas, more spice is not always better. Temper it with other flavors can enhance. The tools we need to use everyday are those that enhance our presence and represent us to the consumer in a flavorful way. I prefer blogging over twitter and facebook for interacting with folks.
Peppers are easy to grow. I had long hots and jalapenos in my garden last year. Even after the animals ate the top off of one (leaving little or no leaves) it still grew up with tons fruit. I too about 8 months ago made a business plan to "explode" the places I showed up on the web, including several blogs. I narrowed it down to two blogs, and have had good success ratios with both. I have "more room to improve" what I am doing now, then to add more.
Great analogy with the peppers and the marketing tools, Richard. Quality over quantity.
Love the colors in the photo! Sifting through all of the available tools is time consuming and there is no way to truly test all tools at once - it would take way too much time and energy. A half hearted attempt is not an accurate measurement. Truly testing a few at a time is the smart thing to do.
Richard,
Cooking with peppers is about maintaining a balance of flavors that do not override the rest of the meal, just like maintaining a semblance of balance regarding social media. Too much of either produces less than satisfactory results. Great photo of the peppers!
Richard, my sister has a little pepper bush, and every time I see her she pulls a couple out of her purse. And you're right - a little bit goes a long way!
Hi Richard, I like peppers and spicy food - and you're right a little of some of those goes a long way! Great analogy, that a few good systems, like a few good peppers will serve us well.
How many times have providers told you it will only cost you 1 or 2 more transactions to justify the program they are selling and you will receive many more transactions than that. I agree we need to have a few good systems and modify them to fit our style of doing business.
A person can have lots of tools, that's for certain. But if you have lots of tools that are not effective, all you have done is overload the toolbox and then you can't find the one tool that serves you best. It pays to re-evaluate our toolboxes every now and then.
Thanks for the reminder.
I'm the cook at my house too, and my wife can handle far more peppers than I can. As far as business tools, I try to keep my marketing as simple as possible so I can narrow it down to what works and scrap the rest.
Richard, first, LOVE the pic.
Second, I enjoyed the correlation. I made a decision earlier this week that there are some things that once my contract is over, will be gone. Because all the tools in the world, if you don't USE them, don't help you one little bit.
Thanks! :-)
Richard. I agree about spreading ourselves to thin on this social media thing. As for your peppers, although I do like spicy and hot stuff, after I eat it, everything else's flavor is gone.
