Forty years ago today, an amazing feat occurred. Nearly everyone that had access to a television was glued to the set as astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the strut of the lunar module on to the surface of the moon.
It didn't matter that he misspoke his historic quote, which should have been "that's one small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind" by leaving out the article. The event was of such a momentous proportion that the minor slip was ignored.
The late Walter Cronkite was moved to tears as President Kennedy's dream was fulfilled. The "Space Race" was over, and the United States had won.
It is impossible to convey the lintense level of emotion surrounding this event. Everyone who was alive at the time remembers exactly where they were and who they were with as the single most significant scientific achievement of all time was sucessfully accomplished.
It was indeed a giant leap for mankind that I will never forget!
This is a short NASA video commemorating the event!

Richard, Great motivator! You're right. I was clued to a television. Isn't it amazing how far we've come in 40 years!! Have a great week and thank you for bringing this memory back!
Y & D,
It really is hard to convince those that didn't experience the event the importance that this event had in our lives. The dearth of comments seems t indicate that it's just an accepted fact. Oh well, what can you do? Thanks for the comment.
Richard - I have vivid memories of this date 40 years ago. Some of it was funny. See our neighbors had just purchased a 25" color TV. It was beautiful back then. We went over to watch the moon landing. It was broadcasted in black & white.
It was pretty exciting. But it seems like a let down now. It took ten years to go so far but it doesn't seem like we've done that much more in the last 40 years. Back then as a nine year old, I imagined that by this time we'd have colonies up there on the moon and doing stuff there.
Beautiful picture!
Claude...
Now that's funny. But it was amazing that at that time to have TV broadcast from the moon! Now that was pretty cool! THX
Tim...
That's because the politicians got involved. Better to throw the money at useless social programs that for the betterment of mankind. It makes me sad to think about it. Thanks for the comment.
Marilyn...
Thanks for the kind words.
Hi Richard:
I'll always remember that also...
1969 was a great year...I was 12 (I think we are about the same age).
Man on the Moon and the '69 Mets!!!
Richard,
And their footprints are still there. Given the technology at the time, an utterly amazing feat. There is nothing we can't do when we put our minds to making it happen.
Rich
Richard - My husband and I were just commenting on
"Where were you the day they walked on the moon?"
Wait - I thought the whole thing was staged in the midwest ?? j/k - great pick, and although it is before my time, I could certainly see it being one of those handful of moment where you never forget where you were and what you were doing.
Richard,
Neil Armstrong could not have spoken more appropriate words. I have warm memories of my parents watching Walter Cronkite report news - he was very comforting and genuine. Great picture!
Toula...
I had just turned 13 in June ... so we are about the same age! ;)
Rich...
It was more than amazing, it was a miracle. And to think that we pulled the plug after Apollo 17 makes me wonder what would have happened had we continued. THX
Lisa...
I was in our family room with EVERYONE! It was amazing. Thanks.
Richard: That was just before my time, but it does seem a shame that we haven't had such a notable space experience since then. Then again, maybe everything else we've achieved like an international space station, hubble telescope and Mars rover are just beginning to feel very commonplace. Our space program is still amazing, I think we're just spoiled.
Steve...
Nothing like this has happened since ... everyone, and I mean everyone watched this event. It was bigger than big! Thanks.
Linda...
It was sad to hear of the passing of Walter Cronkite this past weekend. He was a HUGE supporter of the space program. Thanks so much!
Chris Ann...
This moment was bigger than ANYTHING ...nothing else mattered at the time. It was momentous and everyone knew it. It was us against the Soviets, and we won! I can't put into words how significant that was!
Richard - My wife's best friend was born on the day of the moon landing. I need to remind her to call and wish her a happy 40th birthday!
Richard, I love the photo as always. I do remember watching, I remember how excited I was, glued to the TV for sure. Nothing like it has happened since that gave me that feeling of such excitement.
There are certain things that stick out in my mind, the moon landing, JFK assassination, MLK assassination, the great northeast blackout, the first time I saw an eclipse using a toilet paper roll and tin foil, which is now used for other things... but anyway. There are a few more, but not many.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
I listened to a recording of the broadcast yesterday. It was incredibly exciting!
I've seen the film of the landing about a billion times I'm sure. But there's no way that could compare to actually seeing when it happened.
The lesson here is, as Richard says, there's nothing we can't accomplish when as a nation, we come together.
I can well remember sitting on the floor in front of the television with my parents watching history. Even with the technology we have access to now, the mission is still awe inspiring.
Bella Luna and happy 40th anniversary!
Hi Richard.
What are your thoughts on the conspiracy theorists who think the landing never happened.
Seems silly to me, but I know some smart people who are in doubt.
Thanks for writing,
Ken
Richard: Ahhh, too funny.... we're in synchronous orbit today my friend! Great minds think a like... nice post!
Richard,
This was a very momentous occasion and you are right about remembering where we were when it took place.
Richard,
I remember watching this on the black and white television with my relatives on my 6th brthday! Great memories.
Nothing today, Garners the sme interest as the moon landing did back then. Today, new discoveries are not marveled at, but expected.
Richard,
I remember exactly where I was and I was glued to the TV. It was hard to believe we had men actually walking on the moon!!
