If there is one thing about me that you can take to the bank, it is that I am the same person professionally that I am personally. I don't offer any pretenses just because I don the mantle of real estate broker. I am who I am!
I am not always level-headed or calm in a crisis. Sometimes, when I go in to battle for what I think needs to be done to right a wrong I get somewhat "animated." I have even been awarded the title of "The Enforcer" in recognition of my persistence and determination to get something done no matter what it takes. And sometimes it takes doing things that might make others feel uncomfortable.
And although I usually succeed in my never ending quests for truth, justice, and the American way, the intensity of the activity has drained me. You see lately, there are just too many skirmishes for one soldier to fight.
Perhaps I should leave my feistiness and zeal at home when I head to the office. Perhaps I should try to remain calm in the face of all of these assaults against my clients that threaten to thwart their dream of home-ownership. Perhaps I should let them fight their own battles.
Ah, but then that wouldn't be me, would it?

This is a fact that comes through loud and clear in your posts and comments.
Enforcers are good. Advocacy is good. Fiduciary is good.
That's our job.
Great blog. I like the name of the enforcer I have been nicknamed the Hammer by my clients and lenders. I even had a client send give me a gold hammer charm.

Hi Richard, I am savoring the moment here, was not able to be on AR for a few days so... coffee in hand.. a GREAT Richard post in front of me... Life is good, Life is GREAT!
I used to be called "Crusader Rabbit"... it is still true you know...
Keep being you! That's what makes you such a wonderful person. I would want you on MY side, LOL. Not the "other side".
Great post! And I am glad you are you!
Choose your battles wisely! Have a great weekend!
Richard..you are right. You should be the same person on line, in your car talking to a customer, showing property and with your family. Real deal, honest, up front. No games. No punches pulled.
Richard, I would rather have one of you on my team than 100 people who can never make a decision or take action. There are leaders and followers. I put my money on you being a leader. I'm sure all your clients like your persistence to fight for them when the need arises.
We all know you are genuine in your tasks and endeavors. Its what makes you Richard and unique. We love you for it and read you because of it.
Richard, passion is a good thing, particularly when it is used to help others. Don't change. We love you as you are, and your clients need you as you are!
Hi Richard,
I would be very surprised to find out you were not the same person ALL the time. Your blog gives me a feel for those attributes ..you can't leave them home and then go to the office. I'm sure you do feel drained after the fight but the feeling of accomplishment far out weighs it!!
Lenn...
And it can be very hard sometimes. The last few days have taken a lot out of me! THX
Heather...
"The Hammer!" Hey, I like that. And it's really cool that your clients gave you one! Thanks.
Andrea...
"Crusader Rabbit!" Ah, another alter-ego for the gang. How cool. Glad to have you back.
Marilyn...
It seems like the battles are finding me! I hope that you have a great weekend too! THX
Andrew...
I think that most people respect that. At least I hope that they do! Thanks for the comment.
Michael...
But I don't think that they know how hard ...lol ... there is a dark side to me! THX my friend.
Wait, Richard. Didn't you comment that you were hesitant to become an AR Ambassador due to shyness? If time is a constraint, that I understand. Otherwise, you just described all the reasons you'd make a great Ambassador...
Sincerely,
Another feisty one
Laura J...
Look at me ...I'm blushing! Thanks for the very kind words.
Susan...
Of course, you ALWAYS make me blush ... but I like it! Thanks my friend!
Dorie...
Now when I say "animated" I mean everyone in the office has to shut their doors. Lol and thanks as always!
Irene...
OK here's the answer. I'm only able to overcome my shyness when I have a battle to fight. I know that is something that I'm very good at, and something that I can accomplish.
But just to call someone and introduce myself terrifies me!
Most of the friends from AR that have called me will tell you that it takes a while for me to get going !
Lenn is right - Being who you are in this case is great. Let me give you an example. I purchased a riding mower the other day, long story short it didn't work. Well my wife who was already having a bad day got on the phone with the store. Lets just say lots of yelling took place and she almost broke my home office phone. Being who she was was perfect. No apologies needed. Now I say to you the same thing I say to her - you just have to figure out how to let it go at times after the event ... take a jog, play the guitar, read a book, mow the lawn, whatever. :)
Richard,
Where are Amanda and Mel? I would have thought that they would have been all over this post!! Thanks for all you do sir and keeping us thinking.
Hey Don... what am I... chopped liver?
I can personally say Richard is 'The Enforcer'! We depend upon his honestly and passion for finding the truth!
Richard, with your zeal, your single focus, your determination to win the battles at any cost, perhaps your strategy so it isn't so energy draining is to "pick your battles."
Richard; We must be very similar in the way we approach to the day to day wrongs in our business. If they don't get righted, they will persist and get worse. Take a few days off from "the fight" and when you're up to it, get right back in there.
Steve...
Mowing the lawn would do it for me! It's so hot here I wouldn't have ONE BIT of energy left! Thanks for the comment!
Don...
I am certain that Mel will be here. (That's because I already scrolled down the page!!!) lol and thanks.
Susan...
No, you are angel hair with artichokes and ripe olives! MMMMM
Mel...
And to think that you and Amanda got to experience "The Enforcer" in person! I still laugh over that!
Gary...
The battle that I am picking now is whether a property will close or not. We work too hard to lose the deal at the last minute without a fight!
Chris Ann...
Look who's talking, Ms. "Countrywide Crusader!" lol
Funny you should mention artichokes and olives. I am going to be making a pasta salad for tomorrow's party and I have been hankering for artichokes, olives, pepperoni and provolone cheese-sort of like an antipasto, but with pasta. Do you think I can do a cold pasta salad with angel hair? Sounds good to me... I was going to use penne. Any suggestions, oh wise and passionate one?
That's it! I am going to Susan's!!!
Mel, if only! I would love to have the entire gang here. Then my mom can ask me a million times how I know you, and if I really did meet you on the internet and invite to my house!! lol! But we could eat, and laugh and drink red wine, and swim, and eat, and laugh! Richard...are you joining us?
We need to be ourselves our clients would know if we were trying not to be ourselves.
Susan, you know we would have too much fun! We should probably plan it for a time when the family is not around. I have a feeling no one else would get a word in edgewise! Let's get this AR party started!!!
Oh great...
I finally get the "band" back together and I have to run to an appointment. Drat the luck!
Susan... I think the penne is better for a cold salad ... the angel hair was a reference to you!
I miss Don!
Well, call me late to the party... again! :) Richard (The Enforcer), I dont' have the least bit of a problem with passion. Sometimes the nutty things we run into in our professional lives makes it hard to not get a little animated. Besides, we're all pretty fond of you just as you are!
Yeah my partner tells me I'm the bull dog and sometimes I have to kick some ass to get things done and done correctly.
There are never too many fights my friend, just not enough winners. So make sure you're on the right side of the battle and you'll feel better when it's all said and done.
It has been an interesting Friday ... I started to get into another fight and then decided to take it easy for the afternoon, and it was nice!
Richard - We aren't tour guides. We are advocates for our customers as well as the integrity of the system. I don't tilt at windmills - but I don't shy away from challenges or controversy. What I love about blogging is that you get the sense of one's core values before they even have to say it. I think your readers know that you have strong principles and are a tenacious defender of these principles.
