As I sit out here on the deck early in the morning, watching a light mist roll over the landscaping, I am inspired to declare that this is a fine place to reside!
And while I am not on the beach in Waikiki nor gazing over my beloved Smoky Mountains, there is no other place that I'd rather be right now.
And while my "estate in land" may seem to be run-of-the-mill or ordinary by most established standards, it is home to me, and that makes it a place unlike no other on the planet.
My home is my refuge and my sanctuary. And although it is modest in scope and lies in a densely populated area, it is a million miles away from the trials and tribulations of the outside world. It's a place to recharge the internal batteries of the soul in preparation for each new day.
There is an intrinsic value to home ownership that is impossible to define in words or dollars. The place where I live is NOT an investment; it is the fountainhead from which my life flows out into the mainstream, ready to face another day in paradise.
And HOW do you put a dollar value on that?

Hi Richard:
It's PRICELESS!!!
My home is my sanctuary also....
For me, there's nothing like coming home!
Well said, Richard. Your home is truly more than brick and mortar.
Richard,
Thank goodness or we would all be unemployed :) I've truly enjoyed every home I've owned over the years. They're all special in their own way.
Rich
Toula...
And you're right ... you can't place a dollar value on that! THX
Gary...
And so much more than a simple investment! Thanks!
Rich...
You got that right! Thanks my "comment disabled" friend!
Hi Richard,
I know what you mean. I have come to appreciate my home and also find that it is a sanctuary for me. I especially like to sit out on the deck early in the AM as you do. Very peaceful.
You love to get your points across to all those potential first tie home buyers sitn the fence - letting them know that they are living in a room of unnecessary fear and they deserve better accomodations.
Richard, great post and I'm so happy you love your paradise. Just as we love ours. Thanks.
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. If that's the view as you're drinking your morning coffee, there should be no reason to envy anybody. It's serene.
Tony...
Good morning. Here in GA in the summer, it's the only time you CAN sit on the deck before it gets too hot! lol and thanks.
Janice...
That's EXACTLY what I'm trying to do here. This isn't just about money, it's about empowerment. Thanks for the comment!
Gabe...
And that's what makes home ownership so special! Thanks!
What so many HOME owners instinctively understand.

I could not agree more. My wife and I sat out on our deck in Lawrenceville GA and enjoyed a quiet, bird interrupted, breakfast. It was bliss!
Hey Richard solid post and good pictures. Thanks for sharing this with us all. Have a great day my friend
Richard, you post, and most importantly your view has got me doing a CMA on my house. Got room for another Realtor there? Just kidding, but a great post about the joy of ownership.
Nice post and a photo that portrays what you are saying. There's no place like Sanctuary.
Richard, you and I are EXACTLY on the same page that a home is not an investment. It CAN be but it should be thought of as refuge, shelter, paradise, temporary pit stop, whatever fits in your life.
As Dorothy so aptly said.. THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME! Thanks for the beautiful photos and thought-filled words.
Richard,
Vacant lot on my island (non-waterfront) $200K. Construction costs: $125/sq. ft. (average) Housefull of furniture: $100K. Insurance: $5000 Yr. (average) Going home, kicking off my shoes and enjoying my family....Priceless.
You've got it right.
Ed...
It is the view I enjoy every morning as I write my post with a good cup of coffee. Except the fog, that doesn't happen every day! lol and thanks.
Lenn...
I think that is the true "bottom line" of home ownership! Thanks.
Craig...
Oops ... looks like too much code in the box!
Charlie...
I was sitting there wondering what to write about, snapped the photo and voila ...instant inspiration! Thanks my friend.
Joe...
We have some great deals here, so come on over here. THX
Sara...
That is so true! Thanks, I'm off to business meeting and tour!
Richard, I feel the same way about my home and you worte it perfectly...
"My home is my refuge and my sanctuary. And although it is modest in scope and lies in a densely populated area, it is a million miles away from the trials and tribulations of the outside world"
I lived in Northern Virginia for 35 years working for the Federal Government. i can remember how scared I was to leave home in WV, and move to this new big city and work in Washington DC. It was scary, Now that we have moved back to my roots, I can't imagine living in Northern VA again. When I do go back, I cringe with all the people and the TRAFFIC. I just want to hurry and get back home to my refuge and sanctuary.
You put a dollar value on your home by utilizing the sales comparison method, supported by the cost approach and (if applicable) the income approach!
:-)
(sorry, bad habit)
Richard - you are blessed, as many true homeowners are! If Real estate were a mere investment we would be in a much deeper crisis than we are.
A place of love and piece, and a place to recharge the internal batteries of the soul in preparation for each new day - that what home is. Priceless! Thank you for your great post. It makes my day.
Morning Richard, your words are spot on. You've managed to put into words how I feel when I'm home. You certainly can't put a dollar value on that. Buy the way, great great view you have on your deck, sweet!
Hi Richard, Good post. Thanks for sharing.
Best - Sash
Richard so very true. I am grateful every day for our beautiful home and gardens and close to mountain preserve. It's not Hawaii with ocean views but it is our paradise. Whenever we hike in the preserve it's like being in the country inside the city and we alwasy say....this is paradise.
Beautfully written post!
Gary...
It really is a place to "get away!" Thanks
Gail...
And now, all I have to look at is a desk full of papers! Thanks so much for the comment!
Marian...
Very good ... I like that! And thanks for jumping in to the conversation!
Morning Richard, You know what ? I can send pictures and brochures to a client but until they actually experience our island and the sand between their toes it is just a destination or building. When it is finally theirs' it is a " home ".
Richard, isn't that wonderful, to sit and be so recharged at your home by what you see and feel. I sit under our apple tree and just soak it all in.
Looks like you live in a corner of paradise to me.
King Richard enjoying his castle! Chip and I often share that same joy. Sometimes potential buyers get caught up in the "investment" and forget that the house is meant to be a home. This will help us remember to stress the intangible value of the home.
You typically put a price on it with a market analysis, this will develop a strong idea of what the current market value on the home will be.
Now, joking aside, there is no price that can be put on the feeling of being at home. There's just something about it that brings a sigh of relief when you finally reach that doorstep in an effort to escape the madness and mayhem that surrounds the world at large.
Richard, My home is not a castle, nor a luxury home but it is a place where we, as a family can be ourselves, share each day as it comes and create lasting memories. There is no other place I'd rather be! Thank you for another heartfelt post!
Rebecca...
Thanks! BTW when I drive to family functions in Pittsburgh, wild, wonderful West Virginia in my favorite state to drive through! It's a beautiful place, that's for sure!
Jesse...
Lol, that tickled me! THX
Svetlana...
Thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot to me to get validation for my efforts. I appreciate it more than you will ever know!
Richard...I went from a farm, to an appartment, a mobile home park and now back in the country. As you say, nothing fancy, but is mine and it's home! The price...PRICELESS!!!!
Cynthia...
Back when I used to garden a LOT more than I do now, I planted the Leland Cypresses, the Rose, the butterfly bush and the river birches you see in this photo. I actually rooted the BB and the rose from another parent plant. I don't have that much ambition now, so I'm glad I did seven or eight years ago!
Sash...
You're welcome.
Anna...
Sound like you do have your own piece of paradise! Thanks.
I love my home. I have a reading room that is my sanctuary. I love going to the library but it still does not compare to the peace and quiet in a home. Great post.
Hello Richard,
I do love the pictures you put up.
Be it ever so humble....there's no place like home! I love to come home and relax and be around my things.
Patricia Aulson/portsmouth nh real estate
Richard, With all the trials that can come with home ownership, I can't think of any place I'd rather be. My home is once again my sancturary and that's the way it should be.....it IS priceless to me and why I fought so hard and for so long to get it back to what it once was. I'm almost there!
Fantastic words Richard...I am going to print it off and read it to my wife the next time she complains about the alfalfa field out back that replaced our view of Pikes Peak 5 years ago. That alfalfa field truly does insulate my own "sanctuary' from the outside world (at least until I look out the front door and see 45 houses down the street :)
Mike McCann
Richard, today we are all lucky to have a place to call home. I feel amazed and fulfilled each time I'm able to place another person in their home. yehaa~Deb
hey Richie,
I couldn't agree more.
"Be it ever so humble.............
Why want to be anywhere else
During the market upturn, I thought about selling my home when I realized that I cannot afford to buy it back. But, my home was not bought as an investment, it was bought as a place to raise my two childeren.
Back again Richard, thanks for identifying all those plantings you put into your home! My Dad once owned a nursery and I'm a bit of a gardener too. Once again, great view & great photo.
Wow, beautiful picture! Unfortunately the view from my back porch doesn't compare to that!!
