It's hard to believe that Memorial Day Weekend is already here. It's time for barbeques, get-togethers and the Indy 500. Traditionally, it also marks the beginning of the summer vacation season as well.
But we should never forget the genuine significance of the occasion. Memorial Day is the day that we recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by those that fought to protect our way of life. Many did so in pain and agony, enduring suffering beyond imagination.
And our remembrances should be more than perfunctory. Every privilege and entitlement that we enjoy as Americans has been purchased at a very high price by the brave men and women that fought and perished for it, and by the families that lost their loved ones forever in the struggle to preserve our freedom.
Every locality in the nation has an official commemoration on this most important day. Wouldn't it be a good thing to pay tribute to our fallen heroes by planning to attend?
And while you're there, shake the hand of a surviving veteran and thank them for their service.
I'm certain that it will be appreciated.

Richard, I was down at Arlington National Cemetery the other day and the sight of all those graves is awe inspiring, and humbling. Yesterday was flags in where they place an American Flag at every gravesite. Rich
Richard, attending a local Memorial Day function would definitely set the right tone for the weekend. We should not ever forget the fallen who sacrificed the ultimate.
Richard,
Thanks for reminding us all that Memorial Day is much more than a long weekend. And if you, Richard I or Gary are veterans, thank you for your service to our country.
Great reminder thast this is more than a weekend off for many. We all should reflect on the meaning of this Holiday at some point over the weekend.
Richard, this is indeed the holiday to pay tribute to our fallen heroes. I will be going to Arlington National Cemetery this weekend to visit with my Dad. It is an awesome site to see all of the flags in front of the grave markers. As a Viet Nam veteran, your "Thank you" is much appreciated. Have a great weekend.
Our freedom comes from ultimate sacrifice. I am grateful for the men and women who fought for me. Thanks for your thoughts on this.
And while you're there, shake the hand of a surviving veteran and thank them for their service. Words that are oh so true. Great message and great pictures.
Rich...
That is something that I would like to see. My late father-in-law lies at Fort Mitchell, the National Cemetery in Seale Alabama. THX
Gary...
I think that right now it is more important than ever. Thanks.
Irene...
I must admit that I am not ... I drew a high lottery number in 1972. Several of my friends were not so lucky and were sent to Vietnam. It was a very tumultuous time, because of conscription and political turmoil. So I try to be extra mindful of those that served!
it's odd this comes first when you write about memorial day
It's time for barbeque's, get-together and the Indy 500. Traditionally, it also marks the beginning of the summer vacation season as well.
And not city, county, parades to honor our service man and women... maybe that is why we all forget what memorial day is..
I can't tell you how many times this week I have heard // Leaving early Friday to head to the Beach // Now everyone need time off I be the 1st to say.. but maybe when need a stay at home walk down to the town square and celebrate our service members instead.
Nice post, Richard and as the wife of a combat vet, I certainly appreciate your taking the time to express these views...too many people take what our servicemen and women do for granted.
And some of our traditional images need to be updated. I was at a short sale conference last year, and the moderater asked all the veterans in the room to stand. Only one did. A ditzy-looking blond gal who didn't even look old enough to be selling real estate. It made me adjust my filters, and realign my idea of a veteran.
Hi Richard, Good post. Thanks for sharing.
Best - Sash
It is always important that we remember those that have given us the right to live free and the sacrifices they have made.
My friend I agree. I try to let a vet know how much I appreciate their service and the sacrifice that they are even making today by serving. There are many that have laid the groundwork for our freedom and we should always be indebted to them.
Well said sir and thank you for the post.
I remember following my dad around to the various cemeteries on Memorial day with the VFW honor guard. They would do the 21 gun salute and after my job was to collect all the spent shell casing. I had no idea of the significance of the holiday back then. Now I remember the guys I was in the Army with and all the good and bad memories.
Richard - All of those who have sacrificed for us deserve our honor and thanks. It will be a special weekend. Thanks!
Mary
Richard - I am very blessed that my son, brother and nephew who are all currently serving our country and my dad who served during World War II have fought the fight to keep us safe and free. My thoughts and prayers this weekend are with the families of the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Richard,
As entrepreneurs and free marketers, we - more than most - should be appreciative of the liberties we have. Thanks for the post. :)
Steve
Richard, thank you. I get a bit teary eyed on Memorial Day, so many in my family fought. They all came back. Goes even farther back than that, I recently read some family history that made my head swim. So many have given so much to this country, it always gets to me.
Love the flag pictures. I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day!
John...
Yes, it is time for reflection. THX
Michael...
I would love to be at Arlington on a Memorial Day. I will do so, one day! Thanks.
Mel...
You are most welcome. I hope that you have a great weekend!
Hi Richard:
Big weekend here on the Jersey Shore...It's our kick-off of beach-goers.
We all need to remember the real meaning of what this weekend is all about.
Nice thoughts to pay tribute to our men & women in our military.
Mike...
Everything that we enjoy is thanks to the service of our veterans! And we need to let them know that we appreciate it.
Eric...
I think that's the point I was trying to make ... somehow we have misplaced our priorities! We need to remember what the day is all about!
Susan...
Where in the world would we be without them? THX
