Near Bryson City North Carolina lies one of the most interesting and least known areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although frequented by locals, the Deep Creek area of the park offers more recreational opportunities than any other place in the park.
Deep Creek is popular in the summer with swimmers and for tubing. Trout fishing is popular here as well, with a valid North Carolina Fishing license.
You may also ride bicycles on the Lower Deep Creek Trail, one of the few trails in the park where they are permitted. There is a fully improved campground and a ranger station as well.
Deep Creek also features three significant waterfalls within a short walking distance of each other. One of the most popular is Indian Creek Falls.
To get to the falls, simply follow the Lower Deep Creek Trail from the parking lot. At about 0.2 miles, you will be treated to the sights and sounds of Tom's Branch Falls, tumbling into Deep Creek!
Continue to the Indian Creek Trail fork at 0.7 miles, Turn right on this trail, and a sign marking the falls is about a tenth of a mile on your left.
On your return trip to the parking lot, you may want to take the half mile side trail to Juney Whank Falls which is taller but has less water volume than Indian Creek Falls.
Deep Creek is a great way to experience the North Carolina side of the Smokies! Be sure to check it out on your next visit to the region!

This is where my husband and I took our first "family" vacation together. After you pictures I see I really must make plans for another trip.

There are lots of trout here ... you can take the rainbow and brown trout, but the native brook trout or "brookies" cannot be harvested! Good fishing here, though. THX

I've never just ventured out around here in the south, except to go to the airport to visit kids or go to Inman... I will retreat! Thanks for the inspiration.

Richard - Great images! I love the Smokies but usually stay in a chalet outside of Gatlinburg. I have been to the NC portion a couple of times to whitewater on the Nantahala and thoroughly enjoyed those trips.
