The Great Smoky Mountains, the "Place of Blue Smoke!" Another not so wordless weekday!

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park by Richard WeisserThe Cherokee people called the Great Smoky Mountains "Shaconage," or "place of blue smoke."  It is a place of remarkable natural beauty, incredible views, and sparkling streams.

It is an ancient place, created by the cataclysmic collision of the continents which forced the formation of the tallest mountains on earth. But because these are also among the oldest peaks on the planet, they have been worn down and eroded over millions of years into their present state.

So although they are no longer the tallest or the biggest mountains in the world, they remain among the most beautiful.

Beautiful! How lucky are we in the southeast to have such gorgeous mountains nearby! I have some great pics of the Appalachians but it is't my market area!

Richard....I've never driven the Blue Ridge Parkway....I'm putting that on my short Bucket List!

The photos are so beautiful!  I can only imagine how much better it would be to experience the views in person.

SarahGray...

Thanks. Not really my market area either, but I am a "local expert!" ;)

Thom...

Goodness, from Midtown you can be in the Park in less than TWO HOURS! Now, I expect a full report by the 4th of July on your visit to the Smokies!

Renee...

They are beyond belief. Thanks for the comment.

Hi Richard, Gorgeous Mountains and your photos speak to the Blue Smoke beautifully! After the Trail of Tears - are there many Cherokee in Georgia?

Posted by Mary Douglas, REALTOR ®, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado (United Country Ponderosa Realty) about 3 years ago

Mary...

Not so many, but a few descendants. Most in my area are Creek ... Coweta County was named after the Kawita Tribe if the Creek Nation. There is a Cherokee reservation in North Carolina just South of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is the home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation!

Richard, having vacationed in the area numerous times I do agree the Smoky Mountains are very beautiful.

I think you might be a bit biased here Richard but the mountains are beautiful and your photos are exquisite.  When I was young I sponsored a child in the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.  I forgot about that until just now Richard.  Maybe it is time to look into helping within our borders again.  Thanks for the pictures.

Richard - the Smoky Mountains are breathtaking, to put it mildly.  But I have to say ... there hasn't been a mountain range yet that has not engaged my soul.  They are all different ... but much the same in that they impart a sense of majesty and wonder that can't be rivaled.  Thanks for sharing these beautiful shots!

Beautiful pics Richard.  My wife and I love that part of the country and try to visit at least once a year.

What beautiful mountains and photos, too!  I am headed to Tennessee soon and will enjoy the scenery!  It's an awesome scene of stability that is altered only by the weather and the seasons!
