Tips for the Southern Gardener...Chives are easy to grow, and look and taste great!

Chives in the Southern GardenOne of the staples of the Southern herb garden is chives. Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are one of those wonderful garden plant selections that have nearly every attribute desired by chef and horticulturalist alike!

First of all, they are easy to grow. These smallest relatives of the onion are planted in small clumps, grow quickly, and are easily divided every year. They are hardy and require little attention from the gardener.

They produce beautiful purple spiked flowers every spring, which makes them perfect border plants in the perennial garden.

All parts of the chives, including the blooms, are edible and are used in soups, stews and salads to add an onion flavor. The leaves can often be cut and used year-round.

So if you are looking for a plant that is easy to grow, requires little maintenance, has beautiful blooms, and adds zest to your recipes; consider chives for your herb and flower gardens.

Richard....it's hard to grow all these fun things on a condo balcony! Especially since many of the buildings don't even allow this kind of stuff on your balcony! (I've learned the hard way!)

So....that's why I still have a house with a big yard, and lots of places to garden! I've resorted to perennials in many of my beds since I use to spend upwards of $600 a year on seasonal flowers! I'm going to get my herb container garden going again this spring, and looking forward to fresh herbs...and maybe some chives!

Hope you guys did ok with the last storms....I was thinking about you!

Kristin...

I took this photo this morning and just had to use it! Thanks for noticing!

Thom...

We had some hairy moments ... tons of hail and heavy winds and downpours, but we made it through just fine!

I rarely do annuals anymore, except in containers. I have always like to propagate plants from other's gardens and it has worked for me.

I'm known as the "Butterfly Bush" man because of my success with these plants!

I plan on doing more posts on gardening through the season! Hopefully we can swap success stories!

Richard - Chives....The last thing I would have ever thought of. Thanks, now I have chives on my mind.

Must plant chives. Well the pic looks good.

Richard - Beautiful picture!  I like chives.  I have all kinds of allium in my garden and the small ones are like weeds.  They grow everywhere.  I keep on pulling them out and then they sprout someplace else.

Richard, very pretty picture. I have some in my garden, they are rather wild I think, LOL. No planting here, there was ice in the puddles this morning. I have ordered new plants for a special garden this year where we buried our dearest older cat, and the veggies are waiting for better weather too. Thank you!

Claude...

I just bought one clump, and I divide them every year! Now you can't beat that for economy. THX

Rosalinda...

As you know, allium will propagate by seed, and will mature in two years, so they will spread very quickly! Thanks.

Bo...

They are so good when they are fresh cut! THX

Great gardening post... we're getting things ready to plant in the south 40 right now.  Now, if the moose would just keep their fat lips off the goodies, we might actually have something to harvest.

Richard, we haven't grown Chives, but it looks as if it spreads as robustly as Rosemary...

Lovely picture as always Richard.  I'll be getting my basil, oregano and rosemary in later this month!  Now you've got me thinking about a baked potato with sour cream and chives for breakfast!

Thanks Richard, the photo reminds me of my childhood. We had a huge herb garden and yes, chives are easy to grow and tasteful.

Richard,

We had an herb garden at one time but I let it go because we just got too busy. In FL you have to constantly watch vegetables and herbs because they need lots of water and you have to keep the bugs controlled.

We have chives growing wild all around our house.  They are in the front yard, the flower beds, the back yard, the woods out back.  Everywhere!  And I do go out with the scissor and snip them off to add to dinner on occasion!  I also like to dry them for those 'off season' when hearty soups and stews are a standard menu item around here.  Their blooms are beautiful!

Richard- Have grown these for years and never seen a bloom as pretty as yours.  I don't spend any money on herbs at the store anymore unless I'm buying seed.  It's so much better fresh.

Richard, I do grow chives in my garden, or shall I say, the chives grow in the garden for me! but I did not know that the beautiful purple flower was edible, I thought that once they bloomed they had grown too long! My husband likes to mow them over for the aroma. My daughter likes to take them home with her, she uses all kinds of spices and herbs in her fabulous cooking! Thanks for sharing-always something new to learn!
