Historic Fayette County Georgia is rife with landmarks and reminders of the past. Many historic buildings, mills and cemeteries give us a window from which to view the way things were in days gone by!

The Fayette County Courthouse was constructed in 1825, making it the oldest remaining in the state of Georgia. The clock tower was added in 1888, and the building has been remodeled several times.

The courthouse fell victim to arsonists in 1983, but the damage was limited enough to retain the original structure and the building survived. Although government operations have been moved to a new and larger building, the old courthouse still houses the Chamber of Commerce and has several meeting rooms.

The courthouse sits in the square in the center of old downtown Fayetteville, and may be one of the most photographed buildings in the state. The photograph in this article was taken in the late 1990's with Christmas lights and a dusting of snow, very unusual in Georgia!

If you have never visited Fayetteville Georgia, put it on your list of "must photograph" places. There are many photographic opportunities that are not to be missed!
