I am the cook at our house, and I like my dishes to burst with flavor. In most cases, I use fresh chilies from the garden to add that extra zing that makes the recipe stand out.

The good thing about peppers is that they are easy to grow and quite prolific. A single plant can produce hundreds of chilies, and you can have many varieties in a very small space,

The bad thing about hot chilies is that a little pepper goes a long way. You really have to control the heat, especially when using habaneras or serranos. Adding too much fire can really scorch your meal.

So before long, you find that you are producing many more hot peppers than you can ever consume. You can pickle, dry, and preserve to your heart's content, and it's probably impossible to give away your excess so you always have some laying around with no possible way of ever being used.

The same thing can be said about business tools. Take a moment and think about all of the systems and tools that you have that are lying around unused and dormant. We often put into place more marketing devices than we can ever properly maintain, and before long we just have another task that we "forgot to do" because all of the tools that are supposed to make our lives easier really demand a lot of our time.

A few good systems are better than many systems that we can't or won't use.

Because you really can have too much of a good thing!

Yesterday afternoon I showed one of my listings, and just as the potential buyer drove off the sellers returned home. Since they are always anxious to get feedback after a showing, I stayed and chatted with them for a while.

We talked a lot about their house and the real estate market in general, and about what was selling and what was not selling. During the conversation at some point, I uttered this phrase:

"I have been in this business since 1984 and I have NEVER seen anything like this!"

It wasn't until I was in the pickup driving home that I began to reflect on those words. Wow, I was licensed way back in1984 and marked my 25^th anniversary this year. I have done everything from building houses to being the principle broker of a downtown Atlanta firm.

I can honestly say that in most cases that I have "seen it, done it, been there!" However, despite all of the highs and lows, the eighteen percent interest rates and the 100% appreciation years, I have NEVER seen anything like this market.

It is truly unprecedented. A product of incontrovertible market forces, the readily available information on the Internet and the pie-in-the-sky get rich schemes depicted on cable TV. Throw in some government intervention for good measure and you have a formula for disaster.

Every day presents a new experience and a new opportunity to learn. The school of hard knocks is now offering doctoral programs.

I have completed my internship and I am ready to have my degree conferred!

Forty years ago today, an amazing feat occurred. Nearly everyone that had access to a television was glued to the set as astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the strut of the lunar module on to the surface of the moon.

It didn't matter that he misspoke his historic quote, which should have been "that's one small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind" by leaving out the article. The event was of such a momentous proportion that the minor slip was ignored.

The late Walter Cronkite was moved to tears as President Kennedy's dream was fulfilled. The "Space Race" was over, and the United States had won.

It is impossible to convey the lintense level of emotion surrounding this event. Everyone who was alive at the time remembers exactly where they were and who they were with as the single most significant scientific achievement of all time was sucessfully accomplished.

It was indeed a giant leap for mankind that I will never forget!

It was 56 degrees in Newnan Georgia this morning. That's a record low for this date in July. And while it is a far cry from shivering weather, it's a relief from the normal deep south lows in the 70's.

And while it doesn't really affect every day life or change anything of significance one way or another, it's always nice to enjoy something that is unusual or out of the ordinary! It sets this morning in July apart from all of the others previous that I have experienced.

This morning is special because it is different. It is memorable because it is unique. It bears mentioning because it is outside the parameters of what is normally expected.

Likewise, if we conduct our businesses in a way that is beyond what is normally expected, we too shall be set apart and recognized as unique and memorable.

Keep in mind that being ordinary does not set us apart from the rest.

Being exceptional does!

After a week rife with problems and issues, I'm looking forward to the weekend. And it's not due to the fact that I won't be working, because I will be on the job as usual.

But the weekend work is going to be easy and relatively stress free. Visiting listings, refilling brochure boxes, checking up on sellers and catching up on a ton of web work!

And the reason that I can relax is simple ...the banks and attorneys are closed, so I won't have to make that endless stream of phone calls, faxes and emails trying to finish work that has already been done, and then done again, and then done once more for good measure.

No mental exercises, arguments, debates, pleadings, or reminders until Monday. At that time the bane of my existence shall awaken again and I shall be forced back in to mortal combat.

Until then, the 150 mile circuit of checking my listings is like not working at all!

Who knows, I might even play the radio and hum a tune along the way!

I don't consider myself particularly old. But I have been taking photographs for a long time. And although I used some sophisticated mid 1980's equipment, the actual photographic technique that I employed was the same one that has been in use since before the American Civil War.

That process involved exposing light sensitive chemicals to a projected image, and then preserving the image by "fixing" the active chemicals into a semi-permanent state of preservation.

The photographer was responsible for exposing the film for the correct amount of time for the amount of light allowed to be projected on to the film surface. The process was irrevocable, as once the film was exposed it was committed to the shot.

But the photographs that resulted were "real" images, permanently etched into cellulose and relatively stable, especially if stored in a cool dark place.

And you don't need a computer or disk drive or printer to see them. A magnifying glass is all you need to enjoy the captured and preserved frame!

Yes, it was a lot of trouble and a lot of expense, but it was also mysterious and fun and the waiting for processing contributed to suspense of whether or not a good image was produced!

I'm feeling a little nostalgic. I think I'll dig out some of those transparencies tonight!

If there is one thing about me that you can take to the bank, it is that I am the same person professionally that I am personally. I don't offer any pretenses just because I don the mantle of real estate broker. I am who I am!

I am not always level-headed or calm in a crisis. Sometimes, when I go in to battle for what I think needs to be done to right a wrong I get somewhat "animated." I have even been awarded the title of "The Enforcer" in recognition of my persistence and determination to get something done no matter what it takes. And sometimes it takes doing things that might make others feel uncomfortable.

And although I usually succeed in my never ending quests for truth, justice, and the American way, the intensity of the activity has drained me. You see lately, there are just too many skirmishes for one soldier to fight.

Perhaps I should leave my feistiness and zeal at home when I head to the office. Perhaps I should try to remain calm in the face of all of these assaults against my clients that threaten to thwart their dream of home-ownership. Perhaps I should let them fight their own battles.

Ah, but then that wouldn't be me, would it?

I finally realized that most of the stress that I suffer is the result of the complete incompetence of someone else. I realize that I have no control over that. In order to keep from busting a blood vessel I must think only happy thoughts.

Like yesterday, when the nationally known mortgage company kept telling me that we needed the power turned on for an appraiser at a house we sold. The house is not our listing, so I could not have the power turned on if I wanted to. So I spent all day on the phone trying to resolve the problem.

Last night the client sent me a copy of the appraisal that was done weeks ago. Apparently someone at the mortgage company "forgot" that they already have it.

I spent an entire day of my life struggling in vain to fix something that wasn't broken.

Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, I must keep thinking happy thoughts.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a popular and pleasant diversion from the hustle and bustle of busy downtown Gatlinburg. Although it takes just minutes to get there from the heart of town, the visitor is transported to a completely different time and place!

The fifteen mile, one way loop is not well-suited for those on a tight schedule. You will rarely be able to maintain the 10 mph speed limit, and you will be compelled to stop the car many times to get out and experience the ancient stream bed and the verdant forest.

There are some overlooks with good views, but this trail is more about Roaring Fork itself. It is a world of rocks and moisture and moss and shade loving plants. You are likely to spot a deer, or if you are really fortunate and observant, a black bear!

A few brave settlers once built small hardscrabble farms along this watercourse, and a few structures have been preserved here in an effort to depict what life was like in the time before the national park was established.

But the journey here is about the theater of the forest, the fragrance of the firmament, and the music of the cascading stream. It's a sensory explosion that overwhelms even the most citified sojourner and beckons them to stay and enjoy a long draught of primeval essence!

To get there from Gatlinburg, simply take Airport Road and follow straight into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and then follow the signs to the trailhead.

As hard as it is to believe, July 16th 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of the liftoff of the Apollo 11 lunar expedition, which was the first mission to have a man walk on the surface of the moon.

On that day, three men, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins were strapped into the capsule atop the biggest firecracker ever made and were propelled from the "surly bonds of earth" on a mission of extraordinary historic significance.

I don't think that those that were not alive to witness this momentous event will ever understand the impact of this singular aspiration on American society and culture, and the level of national commitment that was necessary to achieve the goal set by President Kennedy to place a man on the moon before the end of the sixties.

Can you imagine accomplishing this amazing feat with the technology that was available in 1969? The pocket calculator was not even invented yet, the engineers had to use slide rules to make their calculations. There were no off-the-shelf electronics that could be used, everything had to be first invented and then constructed from scratch.

And when it came time to land the lunar module on the surface of the moon, the electronic navigational equipment failed and it came down to a human pilot visually flying with a joystick and landing with only a few seconds worth of fuel left..

But the country was committed, and these brave men were committed, and there was no turning back. And when all was said and done, they had successfully completed the greatest scientific mission of all time with nothing but rudimentary equipment and sheer determination.

I still sense the euphoria every time I think about it. It was an amazing time to be alive, and it changed the way we think about both space and the ability of the good people of the United States to collectively pursue a challenge that was previously considered impossible to achieve, and succeed beyond our wildest dreams.

I have goosebumps now just writing about it!

One of the interesting things about real the real estate business right now is that every deal is unique and different and requires a little extra attention. Gone are the days of methodically taking care of the business end of the profession.

In the past, the bulk of my efforts were focused on lead generation. There were lots of agents vying for customers and most of my work was directed towards attracting new prospects.

That paradigm has indeed shifted over the last few years. There is no lack of ready and willing customers. The only question is one of "able" and how to make certain that a transaction will actually close.

And it's not just the buyers that pose potential problems, it' the sellers too. Even the most basic issues such as the ability to deliver clear title are no longer a certainty. Many deals are lost by sellers dragging their feet and not moving forward in a timely fashion.

The net result of all of this is more work for the real estate agent who is just trying to keep it all together.

It's stressful yet exciting at the same time. And a successful closing brings a sense of satisfaction over and above any monetary compensation.

It's the euphoria that comes from winning against all odds and it feels great!

I hosted my monthly card group at the house last night. I have been playing with this same gaggle of gents for about fifteen years now, every second Friday of the month.

After such a long period of interaction, you really get to know each other. And I'm not talking about how they play cards; I'm talking about their lives, their jobs, their families and most of all, their observations about what's going on in the world.

Opinions flow as freely as the beverages, and the discussion eventually turns to the typical political pugilism that one would expect from  a diverse group.  However, last night, he overall tenor of the conversation was different.

There was very little optimism about the economy and the future from any sector of political persuasion. The normal sparring and banter was overshadowed by commiseration. There was an overriding aura of despair that could not be dispelled by even the wittiest quip or aspersion.

And what was most unusual was that there were no solutions offered. Nobody has any idea as to what needs to be done to put the country back on course.

Although not random, I would say that my little group is a fair sample of the population. And my unscientific poll indicates that citizen confidence is eroding and waning month by month.

It's really something to think about.
