The office is deserted. There is little or no activity. Have I missed something? Is there some impending disaster looming? Have I missed a memo?
No, believe it or not, in Coweta County Georgia, the 2008 school term starts on Wednesday, August 6. Hard to believe, isn't it?
Summer vacation has changed since I was a student. We used to finish sometime in mid June and usually did not return until after Labor Day, with not many days off in between. Today's modern calendar allows for more flexibility, with long winter and spring breaks.
I'm not sure that I prefer the new way of doing things. Summer vacation as a kid was the greatest time in my life. Long lazy days, with nothing to do other than a perform a few minor chores and go to church on Sundays.
It was days of looking for "pop" bottles to take to the penny candy store to exchange for wondrous treats of every flavor and description. It was popsicles and Tootsie Rolls and licorice of every shape and color.
It was hour after hour listening to a "transistor radio," waiting for the latest hit from "The Beatles," "Herman's Hermits'" or "The Dave Clark Five." But with all good things, they must eventually come to an end.
It was day after day of creating our our fun, making treehouses, playing baseball, basketball, kickball, kick the can, kings in a corner ... anything we wanted to do for what seemed like forever!
There was no fear greater than the approach of the first day of school. Not the impending nuclear crisis in Cuba, not the last reaming strands of poliomyelitis, or the political turmoil in Washington.
We had nothing to fear but school itself!

Wow, it's hard to believe that July is almost gone. Here in Newnan Georgia, the kids start school next week. College football is just a month away, and soon I will be making my plans to visit both the North Georgia Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for my annual fall photo fiesta!
The Male Academy Museum is a hidden treasure in Newnan Georgia. The unusual name stems from the building's origins.
The building is adjacent to Temple Avenue Park, a passive neighborhood park with beautiful landscaping and seasonal blooming flowers of all kinds! It's a perfect place for a pleasant stroll after a visit to the museum.
Sometimes, when you meet someone new, you just don't get along right away. Sometimes it takes a while to get to know the individual's likes and dislikes, and their temperament. It often takes a day or two to find common ground.
Coweta County Georgia is still dotted with farms and ranches of all sizes. And although the dirt and gravel roads in the outlying areas are slowly giving way to the encroachment of development, there are still pockets of the past preserving the counties agrarian roots.
Arbor Springs Plantation is more than a subdivision: it's a neighborhood. Nestled in Northern Coweta County, it's just minutes from I-85 and a 25 minute Drive to the Atlanta Airport.
Currently, the designated schools are Arbor Springs Elementary, Madras Middle and Northgate High School, considered among the best in the county by many!
The summer Olympic Games in Beijing China are just a few short weeks away. As a resident witness to the games hosted by Atlanta in 1996, I can tell you that there is still a lot left to be done right up until the Opening Ceremonies.
Atlanta used many existing facilities too. The Georgia Dome, Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, The Georgia World Congress Center, The Alexander Memorial Coliseum, The Atlanta University Complex and many others.
I am a morning person. I get up early, and have never used an alarm clock. I do my best work with a cup of freshly ground coffee sitting on the deck, surrounded by flowers, a small fountain gurgling in the background.
Atlanta is the capital of Georgia, and at a population of over five million in the metropolitan area, it is by far the largest city in the state. Atlanta has always enjoyed a robust economy, thanks to mild weather and exceptional amenities.
Two major railroads have continuous operations in Atlanta. Both the Norfolk Southern and CSX have main lines and yard facilities in the region, providing excellent freight conveyance. Amtrak has a station in North Atlanta and the Southern Crescent offers regular passenger rail service.
One of North Georgia's most popular tourist destinations is the Alpine Village of Helen. Although the Bavarian façade of the town is relatively new, the history of the area is long and diverse.
You can spend hour after hour in it's quaint and unique shops. Or you can enjoy a Bavarian style feast of Bratwurst and sauerkraut. A horse-drawn carriage rides through town could top off a great meal. And best of all, it's less than a two hour ride from Atlanta! Helen can be very busy at certain times of the year, particularly during Oktoberfest.
The James E. McGuffey Nature Center is located in the Coweta County Fairgrounds complex, south of Newnan. The Nature Center offers both educational and recreation opportunities for visitors.
There is also a demonstration vegetable garden, and numerous floral planting that enhance the overall look of the site.
Last week I reported that we had adopted a little kitten at the Coweta County Animal Shelter.

When planning a landscape design for your home, selecting the proper plant material from the very beginning can save a lot of aggravation and resources down the road. Most gardening issues arise from initially having the wrong plants for a given climate, and not from pests.
Here in Coweta County Georgia, summer bloomers are Hydrangea, Crape Myrtle, Buddleia (butterfly bush,) and hardy hibiscus such as Rose of Sharon do very well with little or no interference from the gardener other than a nice annual pruning to encourage blooms.
There are shopping centers and then there are shopping experiences. Newnan's Ashley Park is an excellent example of combining commerce with a visual explosion of floral color and greenery.
Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) became obsessed with the Water lilies, or Nympheas in his garden in Giverny. So overpowering was this passion that he focused on painting the flowers for the last thirty years of his career, creating over 250 canvas panels depicting the floating flora.
After lunch today I went with a friend to a local animal shelter to look for a dog. Whenever I go there, I always have a look at the cats. I enjoy cats, and have rescued a few in my time but never one as important as this one.

Nestled in the middle of Atlanta's suburban sprawl, Old Town Sharpsburg Georgia has an interesting collection of historic buildings that allow us to imagine what the town must have looked like in times past.
