The Atlanta Botanical Garden is one of Atlanta's favorite destinations for horticultural nirvana. The gardens feature both indoor and outdoor displays, so there is something blooming year round.

The Garden is a photographer's paradise, and you'll see plenty of photos being taken during your visit. And since the flowers that are blooming change with the season, there is always a new subject waiting to be captured by the camera.

The garden features many outdoor displays, including a hydrangea garden, a rock garden, a Japanese garden, a bog garden and just about every other kind of garden imaginable.

There are as many indoor displays as there are outdoors. Tthese climate controlled areas feature some of the garden's most exotic species!

Inside the Fuqua Conservatory, you'll find a tropical rain forest, a desert hothouse, and an orchid house. Here plants collected from all over the world coexist in harmony!

One of the most popular areas is the Children's Garden, a combination playground and classroom that let's kids of all ages have fun while they're learning about gardening.

For some years now I have been collecting Blue Ridge China Plates. Blue Ridge China was manufactured in Erwin Tennessee by Southern Potteries. Each piece was hand painted by a local artist who followed a particular pattern for each manufactured run.

Because of the sheer number of designs, many Blue Ridge enthusiasts are "Pattern" collectors. They seek only one or two pieces of each pattern, which makes it a very inexpensive hobby.

It's great fun to go through antique stores and find a pattern to add to the collection. Good, quality piece range from 10 to 35 dollars so it is very affordable. It is also obvious that some artists were more skillful than others, so there are some pieces that are exquisite, and some are only average.

Blue Ridge China is folk art at it's finest. It's American craftsmanship at it's best and great fun to collect. I highly recommend it as a hobby.

There is an old adage that says that real estate is a great investment because "they're not making any more of it!" While essentially that is true, it doesn't accurately represent what is happening in the real world.

Even though the aggregate amount of real estate as a whole varies very little, the number of parcels of real estate increases dramatically every year as the result of subdivision of larger tracts of land into smaller lots. And this phenomenon is not limited to land, as even large warehouses and commercial buildings are being divided into lofts and apartments.

County courthouses are bursting at the seams with plat and deed books, and the number of recorded parcels increases each year. Subdivision is a long standing method of increasing the market value of a property, and real estate as a business has always benefited from it.

But what is being lost in the process? In many areas, once beautiful vistas are being desecrated by encroaching development. In downtown areas, historic buildings are being demolished to make way for new construction. Picturesque farms are being sectioned off into monotonous housing tracts.

There are times that you cannot even tell in which town you are to be found, because all of the main streets now feature Wal-mart, McDonalds, Old Navy and all of the National chain stores. Uniqueness and individuality has given way to singular uniformity.

As a lover of history, I will always choose preservation over obliteration. I hope that my grandchildren can enjoy America's past in a visual way, and would like to think that they would have the same appreciation of the relics of America's colorful journey through time.

As many of you already know, I love railroads and everything about them. I love the long slender perspective of the rails, the smell of the creosote, and the trembling of the earth as a mammoth locomotive approaches.

Railroading is an old technology, employing the concept of minimizing friction by having a very minute amount of contact between the steel wheels and the steel rails. This allows more tonnage to be moved with less fuel consumption. Amazing, this now ancient technology is green too!

Did you know that the motors in modern diesel locomotives are actually electric? These huge truck mounted motors are driven by electric power supplied by diesel generators aboard the locomotives. This provides the ultimate amount of control and eliminates the need for variable gearing or transmissions.

I love it when I hear the horn of an approaching train. I scramble to get my camera ready in hopes of getting a good photo. I also photograph old railroad buildings and depots anywhere and everywhere.

And what about cabooses? Kids today don't even know what they are!

Note: I remember as a small child the last holdouts of steam chugging up and down the rails of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Many were making their last run, to be dismembered and sold as scrap. Wouldn't it be great to revive a technology that does not depend on petroleum?

With all of the tensions and troubles in the world, sometimes  like to think back to better days. I had the opportunity, several years ago, to spend a week on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

It is a place of astounding beauty. Great effort has been taken to restore the coast to it's pristine and natural condition. There are also picturesque historic towns and villages that a a visitor's delight and a photographer's dream.

The Atlantic Ocean is cold here, with temperature in the 50's even in July. But the seals love it, and they are a common sight along the rocky shore. And you can't beat a New England clam bake with a fresh lobster. Now that's good eating!

Cape Cod is a great family place to visit. Great beaches, outstanding dining, historic architecture, freshwater pond, bike paths and entertainment facilities. If you haven't been there yet, put it on your short list of vacation destinations!

My father, Paul T. Weisser, was an interesting and devoted family man. He needed to be. He and my mother raised ten children, no twins, six boys and four girls. I was the third oldest, also the third boy.

Dad worked hard to keep us all fed and clothed. We only had one car growing up, so you can imagine how crowded that would be on a trip to grandma's house. We were not poor, every family in the neighborhood was working class, and we didn't know anything different.

Dad served in World War II, a tail gunner in a B-29. He married mom in 1950, and embarked on the American dream of raising a family and owning a home.

He was active in church, an accomplished artist and photographer. As an adult, when I returned home, dad and I would go out and take pictures together. It was the one thing we did together, just me and him.

We even had a running joke. When we showed each other our latest photo we would always say: "These are really great pictures, I need to take a picture of them!"

Dad had cancer and we lost him in 1995. His cameras were given to me and I was shocked to discover that the camera he used to take all those beautiful slides when we were kids was a very inexpensive off-brand, all manual settings.

He guessed every exposure and f-stop, yet he took many magnificent photos. I'm still amazed at his level of skill. Had he had expensive equipment, who knows what he might have accomplished?

Here's to you dad. You passed your love of photography on to me, and I hope that I am doing you proud! I miss you every day.

Sprewell Bluff State Park is one of Georgia's hidden treasures. Located in a remote part of Upson County, this 1,372 acre park is a great getaway for those seeking a cool, quiet spot along the river on a hot summer day.

The park is a day use facility. No campground or cabins are available, but there is a boat ramp on the Flint River, a three mile hiking trail, and spectacular views from the bluffs overlooking the river.

The park is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Other attractions in the are include Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House in Warm Springs and Roosevelt State Park in Pine Mountain Georgia.

Sprewell Bluffs State Park is a great destination for getting away from development and enjoying nature in its pristine state. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch, and come enjoy one of Georgia's natural wonders.

Sometime there is a song which just sticks in your head, Try as you might, you can't override, ignore, abort of cancel the music. It has wrinkled your gray matter, and nothing short of a lobotomy will restrain the refrains.

I was a huge Beatle fan. I bought every Beatle album, and learned to play every Beatle song on the guitar. The Beatles were as much of a part of my adolescent life as any other contributing factor. It was with great dismay that I heard the news in 1970 that the Beatles were breaking up.

After the Beatles split up, each went their own separate ways, perusing individual careers. George Harrison released his classic three album set "All Things Must Pass." George was one of the first rock stars to organize a large charity musical event, and his "Concert for Bangladesh" raised money for humanitarian purposes in the newly independent country.

George released several more albums, "Dark Horse" and "Somewhere in England" to name two, which were nice bits of work but less than memorable.

But in 1987, George released "Cloud Nine" which contained the Beatles' tribute "All Those Years Ago" and a cover of James Ray's early 1960's song; "Got my Mind Set on You." It was the latter, propelled by several popular videos on MTV, that achieved the most lasting position in music history

There is a surprise in Meriwether County Georgia that very few people know about, although many pass within a mile of it every day.

The Red Oak Creek Bridge is the longest covered bridge in Georgia. Built by Horace King, a former slave in the 1840's, it has stood at its full length of 391 feet for over one hundred and sixty years. It has weathered storms and floods, and is still in use today as a conveyance over Red Oak Creek.

The Historical Marker at the bridge reads:

This bridge was built in the 1840s by freed slave and noted bridge builder Horace King (1807-1885). Constructed on the Town lattice design, the bridge`s web of planks crisscrossing with a total of approximately 2,500 wooden pegs, or trunnels. Although King is credited with the construction of many covered bridges throughout west Georgia, this is his only surviving bridge of this design. At 391 feet, including the approaches, this structure is the oldest and longest wooden covered bridge in Georgia.

To get there, take Georgia Highway 85 (Not Interstate 85) South through Gay Georgia, and then take Covered Bridge Road to the left.

I have lived in Georgia for a long time ... since 1973. And in the 35 years that I have lived here, I have seen a lot of changes. Some are for the best; some leave me with a sense of loss.

As an amateur photographer, I have always felt that it was important to preserve the past, at least on film if not in reality. When I see an old building or machine, I feel an obligation to photograph from a historian's perspective it in order to preserve it.

Before the advent of digital photography, I was able to document many pieces of Georgia history prior to razing, fires, or just the deterioration of time.

I consider myself a photo-journalist, and have taken it upon myself to keep the memories alive and fresh. Archiving the past is my mission, and I intend on doing it as long as I am able.

It is a responsibility that I will continue to thoroughly enjoy!
