Waxing poetic as autumn’s display wanes…all good things must end!

Colorful fall foliage in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkOh bliss, to see cold hills in flames,
Chilled to the bone amidst the blaze,
‘Ere Autumnal winds consume the fuel.
Fierce fires that burn for too few days.
                                    (R Weisser)

Fall is waning quickly. I love everything about autumn except one thing ... the show is over way too quickly. There can never be a "wait until tomorrow" attitude when one is taking photographs of nature's most awesome display.

I always experience melancholy as November approaches. To go from the heights of visual autumnal Nirvana to the depths of winter's despair. It's a lingering depression that is interrupted only by the holidays. If not for that, winter would be intolerable.

Relish the remnants of fall while they last. It will all be over before you know it.

It's hard to write when you are freezing ... yes, I am insane!

Early snow in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!I'm not a cheapskate, I'm just thrifty. I spend money where it is appropriate, and I try to save a little here and there on some items that are deemed to be of secondary importance.

One of those expenses is HEAT! I live in Newnan Georgia, in the Southeast. And while we experience frigid temperatures in the dead of winter, our falls are usually moderate with chilly nights and pleasant days.

So I typically don't turn on the furnaces until about a week before Thanksgiving. In the mean time we adjust from our summer thermostat setting of 78 degrees to our winter setting of 68 degrees!

However, we are experiencing an early cold snap that has caused the house to slowly cool, day after day, until this morning, when the thermometer is reading a toasty 57 degrees in the house.

And that's chilly, even for me. So I am actually considering going up into the attic and servicing the heaters and getting them up and running.

Hmmm... there's plenty of heat of the office ... and the cats have fur coats! Maybe I can hold out for a few more days!

Why it's always a good thing to try to constantly strive to improve our work.

Blue Ridge Parkway autumn leaf colorOver the course of our lifetimes, we meet a lot of people and travel to many different places. Some are incidental, and some make lasting impressions.

Every autumn, I take photos of the fantastic fall color! I travel to various locations, And there are certain spots that have a particular kind of attraction to me. These are the places where I have taken great photos in the past, and I always return with the intension of "topping" the previous shot.

Even though many of these spots are just a bend in the many miles of roads or paths, I remember exactly where the shot occurred, and try to duplicate the yearly color event.

The photograph in this article was taken this year, at one of those special places along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love the special species of trees and the reds, oranges and yellows that occur there. It's a nice photo!

But it's not as good as some of the previous years! As a matter of fact, it's not in the top five for this particular location! But I will go back next year and try again.

The lesson is this: It's always a good thing to try to constantly strive to improve our work. Sometimes we will be successful, and sometimes we will not. The important thing is to keep plugging away until we get the results we want!

And never be satisfied! Keep the drive alive!

The painting that started it all! Sometimes, a little magic goes a long way!

Watercolor painting of mountainsI have written before about my love for watercolor painting. It's a nice diversion and something I really enjoy doing. Although I don't get a chance to do it as often as I like, I enjoy the rare opportunities for creativity when inspiration strikes.

But I never got serious about it until I did the painting depicted in this article. No, I was not a child at the time, but a twenty-five year old man. I did not have expensive artist materials, just plain paper and those inexpensive watercolors in the little tray.

But I wanted to depict a simple impression of the mountains in fall, so I set to it! And it came out great. It's simple, it's colorful, and it says "the mountains!" Although it's not a great technical painting, it's a decent primitive and as long as I like it, that's all that matters.

This little painting inspired and motivated me to continue my work. I have, since then, purchased expensive paints, brushes, and high quality paper and have done a few hundred paintings, but none have come as close to satisfying me as this little poster of the mountains in fall.

I still have this piece in my office, and I look at it every day. It's magic to me, of the very best kind!

There is safety in numbers, but do you just become one of the herd?

Herd of elk in Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkWe all like to fit in with the crowd. There is a certain kind of comfort in uniformity and there is limited opportunity for failure. There is safety in numbers and automatic acceptance as you blend into the crowd.

But there is a price to be paid for complete security. You cannot be a part of the herd and stand out at the same time. You cannot be an independent, free innovator that is always thinking outside the box and bringing new ideas to the forefront at the same time you are conforming to the norm.

If you want to be noticed, you have to leave the protection of the herd. And when you do, there may be shots taken at you by those that want to bring you down. But if you are alert and wary you will survive.

Will you choose security or singularity? It's up to you!

ERA United Realty staff and agents volunteer for community service in support of Newnan Cougar football!

Newnan High School FootballAgents and staff from ERA United Realty in Newnan Georgia manned the concession stand at Drake Stadium at Newnan High School on Friday night when the undefeated Cougars met the Pebblebrook Falcons on the rain soaked gridiron.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship ...

Swirling and Colorful Fall LeavesMy senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.

(Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man)

As I watched some autumn leaves swirling in a whirlpool in a mountain stream. I was transfixed by the simple circular motion accompanied by the sound of small cascades of rivulets meandering through the ancient boulders.

It is an ancient ritual. The deciduous trees shed their coverlets in preparation for the frigid days ahead, and the pastel hued leaves flutter into the branches and brooks, left to tumble and float downstream like so many miniature canoes.

And as I stared through the viewfinder of my camera, determined to document this ongoing autumnal saga, I came to a sudden realization:

My left shoe was underwater, and it was COLD!

I'm daydreaming about my own little piece of heaven. I will make it happen ... one day!

Caldwell barn in the Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkBeing in the real estate business, I often wonder what people would purchase if money was no object. Would it be a fifty room mansion in Vail or a Manhattan penthouse?

For me, the answer is simple. I would like a little piece of heaven with a flowing mountain stream brimming with trout and some great views of surrounding, tree covered mountains. I want a place to grow my own vegetables and I want to get up every morning and do chores.

I want to play an active role in controlling my environment, and I want to sleep the kind of sleep that comes from doing hard work and eating good wholesome food!

At this point in my life it's still a dream, but it's one that I hope to achieve one day! I am a driven individual, and I will make it happen some day. So it's off to work today to take another step towards achieving my goal! I can't wait to get there.

Art and Science. Sometimes, they can be merged into something beautiful!

Oconaluftee River in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkAs most of my readers already know, I love to take pictures. Years ago, I would not even use that word ..."pictures." I was a photographer, and I took photographs. Photographer was the science of using controlled light that passed through glass and chemically reacted on a thin film to produce an image.

I could always feel that process taking place. I could sense the shutter opening and the light passing through the layers of glass and then through a variable opening until it focused upside down on a section of film.

But that has changed with the advent of the digital camera. The process is no longer chemical, it's electrical. And instead of molecules reacting and changing, an impulse is sent that is converted into an amazing series of ones and zeroes, that when interpreted, can be displayed as a picture.

But I still use the same glass I bought in 1985, the same filters, and I still force the light through a tiny opening onto a CCD sensor. And although I fell as if I am cheating a bit, the resulting picture is still a treasure to behold.

Maybe it's not a photograph is the truest sense of the word, but I like it!

I'm getting too old for this! A turn around trip to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Maggie Valley North Carolina near the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkIt starts at 4:00 A.M. in the morning. I get up, get dressed, double check the camera gear, load the truck, and head for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's not a short trip, about 220 miles to the nearest point of the park, and when all is said and done, the complete trip pushes 750 miles.

It's a trip I have made many times, usually 2-4 times per year. I wasn't really up to it but the weather forecast suggested that it was now or never, so I dutifully began the long journey.

I made it through Georgia all right, but as soon as I crossed into North Carolina I met a new friend, a state trooper who very politely suggested that if I slowed down, I might live a little longer. He also added that I need to pay $151 dollars by December 5th or a warrant would be issued for my arrest! So I was not off to a great start!

Cataloochee Elk in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkBut the mission comes first, so I headed for the Blue Ridge Parkway and Waterrock Knob. Not a lot going on there so I drove through the town of Maggie Valley North Carolina which was very beautiful and scenic. From there I drove over the Cataloochee Divide into the National Park, and was rewarded with many great photo opportunities! I I photographed some great stills and a lot of wildlife, including some good elk shots. I was on a roll now, and spent two hours in Cataloochee before heading back to Heintooga.

Not much there, so went to the National Park at Ravensford and climbed into the elevation for some decent Autumn color. On the way back down I set up the tripod in the middle of the Oconaluftee River for dome nice shots.

Cataloochee Overlook in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkThen I started the long drive back home to Newnan. When I got home tonight, I was exhausted, but I have a nice photo journal of the trip. Which brings me to the point of all of this:

Nothing worth achieving is easy. It takes effort, perseverance and determination to accomplish difficult goals. But if you put your mind to it, you can get the job done!

Now excuse me, I must lie down a bit!

Reflections on my blogging ... a retrospective of some of my favorite public posts!

Newnan Georgia LakeThis is not intended to be a cheesy "greatest hits" compilation of my writings, but rather, a look back on some of my favorite recent articles.

I have selected them both for the message and the visuals. I think that they offer a little slice of life that is both interesting and inspiring.

The reason that we love both Seinfeld and the Beatles! It's elemental. A dissertation on the four basic personality types and how it relates to business.

To everything there is a season...Fall foliage photos from North Georgia. An essay in photos and prose on the changing of the seasons.

Forget what I was thinking earlier this morning, it's time to move on! An anti-political statement.

Martins Mill PondThe best advice I ever received from my father, and it applies today as much as ever! A father-son story that will inspire even the most callous reader.

The life journey takes us to some wonderful places ... if we let it! A look at the ebb and flow of life.

Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most satisfying. Reminiscing about the way thing used to be!

Small towns, county fairs, pep rallies and homecoming queens! A real-life look at communities activities in the small town of Newnan, Georgia!

The good old days and the simple life ... No one said it wasn't a lot of hard work. Hard work is good for both body and soul!

There is a garden of earthly delights....and it takes a lot of work to maintain it! A treatise on approaching all of life endeavors as a gardener faces his crops.

If you have missed any of these articles, I hope that you will take a look and let me know what you think! I enjoy my writing, and I really appreciate it when folks let me know what they think about my creations. It makes all of the hard work worthwhile!

The cold weather is moving in and it's time to "put up" for the winter.

John Oliver Cabin in Cades Cove Great Smoky Mountains National ParkWe have just had our first cold snap here in the south. Patches of scattered frost and I'm having to think about turning on the furnace (it's freezing in here!) Fall is in full force and winter is just around the corner.

Back in the days of self-sufficiency, fall was a time to complete preparations for the winter ahead. It was necessary to make sure that enough food and fuel was "put up" to survive the lean months ahead. Survival depended on a care allocation of resources spread out over the entire year!

Do we think about our lives and are businesses that way? Do we have a complete understanding that we have to plan for the months ahead? Even if times right now are not as productive as we want them to be, the obligation to plan ahead is not diminished.

Whatever resources we have must be allocated over the next few months. We are talking about survival here. To not do so would be disastrous.

It's a fine line between chivalry and sexism ...where do manners end and condescension begin in the world of the double-door?

Old Door in Grantville GAMy friend Melody Botting and I were having a discussion about women and self-sufficiency and it got me to thinking about where things stand in the year 2008 in regards to etiquette and chivalry.

You see, I'm old-fashioned, and I was raised in a different time. I was taught by my mother that you held a door open for a lady, that you carried her packages for her, and that at the dinner table, ladies first ... you didn't take a bite of food until all ladies present took one first.

Now, I'm not saying that a woman CANNOT do those things for herself, I am just demonstrating deference and respect by these simple gestures. I am NOT being condescending or demeaning, or trying to illustrate that men are in any way superior to women. Nor am I flirting! Well, I might be flirting but it's not germane to this discussion, because I will show the same courtesy to all women whether I am flirting or not!

So, here's the question of the hour: I face this dilemma every day...

Who in their right mind invented the double door? I an referring to the set of doors inside the other set of doors. You know, you go into a restaurant, and you hold the door for the ladies, and then there is ANOTHER DOOR INSIDE! So once the ladies walk through the outside door that you are holding open for them, they are suddenly caught are caught in the conundrum of what to do NOW when faced with the second set of doors?

Ladies firstDo they all stand there and wait like in the tiny vestibule like packed sardines while I close the outside door, walk to the inside door and open it? Or do they open the door themselves and risk showing me disrespect by not acknowledging my original act of courtesy?

Typically, one of the ladies will open the door and then hold it open for everyone, and then when I come in last, the second dilemma occurs:

Do I just walk through the door that is being held open for me, or do I take the PASS? That is, do I move to hold the door open, so the lady holding the door open can go ahead, leaving me to hold the door open for myself.

This pass is often an awkward moment. And I either get a bewildered look or an "eat crap and die look." But if I just walk through the door that is being held open, all of my upbringing flashes before my eye and I fell like I am letting my mother down!

So what do you think? Am I just being old-fashioned, or should we keep the traditions alive? What is the place of chivalry in today's double door society?

Helton Creek Falls in the Mountains of North Georgia.

Helton Creek FallsThe North Georgia Mountain region offers many waterfalls. One of the most accessible is Helton Creek Falls, located in the Chattahoochee National Forest just north of Neel's Gap on Blood Mountain.

There are actually two falls here, an upper falls that plunges at a sheer angle and is the taller of the two. and a lower falls that is easier to approach and although slightly less spectacular, is still a decent cataract worthy of a visit.

To get there; take U.S. 129 about 12 miles south from Blairsville. Turn left on Helton Creek Falls Road. The road is narrow and is only paved for about a quarter mile, so drive with caution.  Continue on the winding gravel forest service road approximately two miles to the parking area.

From there, take the well marked trail only 1/10 of a mile to the Lower Falls, and then an additional 1/10 of a mile to the Upper Falls observation deck.

Nearby attractions include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Vogel State Park,  Helen, Georgia, Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, Dukes Creek Falls, Desoto Falls, Anna Ruby Falls, Brasstown Bald, Unicoi State Park and Appalachian Trail and Walasi-Yi Center.

The reason that we love both Seinfeld and the Beatles! It's elemental.

EarthFor those of us old enough to remember, Seinfeld was one of the most popular television series of all time. If you go back even farther, The Beatles dominated not only music, but the entire direction of our culture. The reason for this phenomenon of success was discovered a long time ago!

The ancient Greeks believed that everything in the universe was composed of a combination of four basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. Everything that existed could be broken down into these four basic components.

The Greeks attached this concept to everything, including philosophy and the arts. Even human emotions and personality were attached to the four elements. It is considered inborn, something beyond our control, but each one of us has varying levels of each of the four personalities as defined by the elemental assignment of traits.

AirSo if you were to have four individuals that closely represented only one of these personalities each, you have the formula for success. It is easy to identify the predominant element in each one, and the combination of the four elements together makes for a satisfying completeness. In both Seinfeld and the Beatles, this distinction is obvious.

Let's get down to specifics: In Seinfeld you have Jerry (earth,) Kramer (air,) George (fire,) and Elaine (water.) In the Beatles you have Ringo (earth,) Paul (air,) John (fire,) and George (water.) Because each reflects one of these personalities, we relate to them based on our own internal make-up. No matter what our own preferences are, one of these individuals, or a combination of individuals, will appeal to us.

We all have some of each of these four basic elements in our own personality to some degree, and the weighting of the components determine who we are, and how people relate to us.

FireSo how does all of this translate to business? It does in many ways. For example, if you are assembling a team, you do not want individuals of the same elemental disposition. If you have two "fire" on a team, you will only have arguments all of the time, if you have two "air" you will pitch ideas endlessly without ever accomplishing much of anything.

Rather, you want teammates that complement each other, with one filling the personality voids of the other. In this manner, the team can accomplish more combined as a whole, than the sum of its parts.

So where do you fit in all of this? Are you a Kramer, or a Ringo? Or perhaps you are a combination of John and Elaine? It's fun to think about, and if you really don't know you might want to try a D.I.S.C. test!

And in case you didn't know, I'm fire with a touch of air!

(Mel, this was for you!)

To everything there is a season...Fall foliage photos from North Georgia.

Fall foliage in North GeorgiaTo everything there is a season, and
a time to every purpose under heaven
:

                                    Ecclesiastes 3:1

Fall has commenced its annual color display in North Georgia. It's always been my favorite time to take photographs. We have had a few years of drought so I am not sure how good the color will be this year, but I always like to get out and experience the change of the seasons.

These are some of my first Autumn shots for 2008. In the south, the leaf period can be very long because we rarely experience early hard freezes. I have taken foliage photos well into December. But you never know what nature has in store, so you must move quickly to get the best looks at good color.

I will be adding many more photos as time allows, and hope to describe a lot of the North Georgia Region. These photos were taken near Blairsville, a small town nestled in the mountains.

I can't wait for next week, when I'll be taking another trip in search of autumn glory!

Roadside wildflowers courtesy of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Georgia WildflowersThe Georgia Department of Transportation and the Garden Club of Georgia have teamed up to provide Georgia travelers with a beautiful display of wildflowers along Georgia Highways.

Highway beautification is the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady and wife of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Mrs., Johnson loved the wildflowers of Texas, and dedicated her efforts to adding beauty to America's roadsides with landscaping and the removal of excess numbers of billboards.

The Highway Beautification Act was passed in 1965, and sojourners have since benefited from the results of the legislation. Today, our Interstate Highway System is the most beautiful network of roads in the world.

And our Georgia roadsides have embraced the wildflower philosophy. Not only are the flowers stunningly beautiful, but they also require less mowing and maintenance. So the gorgeous colors are "green" too!

It's always been said that getting there is half of the fun. Never has that been more true than now, thanks to all the people that made highway beautification a realty!

Forget what I was thinking earlier this morning, it's time to move on!

Grotto Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkI just wrote a long diatribe about the upcoming election and the role of the president, and while I was proofreading it, I thought to myself: "Nobody really cares what I think about the state of the American electorate, so dump the epistle and move on!" Poof! Gone!!

And so my friends, you have been spared from the expectations of a simple man that just thinks powers of the president are actually quite limited and that most people that vote do so for inexplicable reasons so there's nothing that can be done to correct that, and we are inevitably doomed, regardless of our actions.

What really bothers me though, is the amount of misinformation that is being promulgated in this forum and elsewhere on the Internet. I am weary of reading so called tidbits are this or that that are factually untrue or even blatant lies. Nobody is going to change their mind anyway! That has long been established.

Great Smoky MountainsSo PLEASE don't try to change minds with urban myths or legends, misleading or doctored statistics, or long-winded biographies.

The average person in the United States will vote based on looks, the way a candidate sounds, or some perceived financial benefit. And nothing, and I mean nothing, will change their mind. That's it, end of story.
